How do I transfer notes from NotePad to my Dell desktop?

I'd prefer to find a better tool to write stuff but don't have that on my iPad yet. Any suggestions?

I have a bunch of "notes" and would like them on my desktop first. How do I transfer notes from NotePad to my Dell desktop? I have gained some experience using Microsoft Word on my new Dell. Do I need interfacing/translation software? I would prefer free stuff as I am not too sophiscated but am ready to purchase if need be.
