I spent £35 with Applcare today, they went through everything with me, new user, the lot - eventually the guy said "your OSX 10.7.3 update is corrupt.

We then initiated the download and reinstall for OSX 10.7.3 - which it did... the volume control worked for 15 minutes - then stopped and control greyed out again.

This is evidently an OSX 10.7.3 problem.... certainy in my case....

My speakers work (midi audio test) just no level control capability.

OK talked to Apple Care and went thorugh the entire troubleshooting course with no results. They toold me I was the first one to contact them about this issue so they went online while on the phone and commented that they would have to push the complaint up higher as it seemed a more widespread problem. What has worked on a temporary basis for me is to reboot into safe mode. Then do a normal reboot and the sound works as long as you stay logged in. If you reboot without safe mode first you may or may not have sound. I tried the safe mode reboot twice and both times the sound works when i do a normal reboot after it. Sounds simplistic but for those of us who dont have any ability to manipulate software commands this works so far.

Thanks richcox10, was starting to fgeel like a rare breed..

I just tried safe mode for the first time. Interestingly;

System prefs> sound>

In the left "Physical devices panle" No audio devices listed

Sound effects> all greyed out

Output devices>No device found, Output volume muted with a tick and greyed out, no ability to click and show volume in menu bar.

Input devices> Ditto.

Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi set up>

Audio devices window >

Adobe After effects 10.5 - No devices available

After Effects 9.0.3 - 2in / 2 out / with a sample rate of 0.0 Hz available (great...)

Premiere Pro 4 - No devices available

Premiere Pro 5 - Built in input x 2 / Built in Output x 2 and Builtin in Mic x 2 all 0.0 Hz only

Premiere 5.5 Says no device aggregate - No devices

Soundbooth 2.0 - 4 in / 2 out and 0.0 Hz only

Test sspeakers button produces no sound

In MIDI window - "Test setup produces nothing"

No volume control in control bar and can't get one.

Reboot Normal;

No - after the reboot - I instantly notice a volume control icon in the mernu bar and the mouse makes that work.

Keyboard keys for mute / down and up all function and produces their desired results.

Applications>Utilities>Audio Midi set up>

Left panel - Physical devices now lists Built in mic / input and output

Software that uses now lists;

After Effects 1.5 no devices

Ater Effects 9.0.3 2 in / 2 out

All other pprogrammes 2 in and 2 out

The configure speakers button produces sound.

Reboot - a second time;

Sound control available and working in menu bar

iTunes gives audio (didn't previously)

Sound control is available in all other programmes vi keyboard muted / down and up keys)

Conclusion:

At this time - booting into safe mode seems to have overwritten something in normal mode and normal mode is behaving - or at least that's how it would appear.

I have page marked this and will come back and update if things change for the worse again.

Hoping my experience helps anyone else suffering loss of audio from the 10.7.3 update.

ScubaBaadger:

I have had it running now without a reboot for about 24 hours with no problems or glitches. Sound is still working properly as are all the other applications. I think you are correct the safe mode overwrites a bad command of some kind in the update and brings a temporary fix and when you do a normal reboot after safe mode it holds that command. I quess as long as i dont power off or reboot it will be fine until Apple can fix the software glitch. Glad it helped you and hope it will help others.

Hi,

Boot into recovery mode i.e. boot into the USB stick with Lion. Install the Lion (again) without remove any partition or other things. After awhile it will startup and then apply the Combo Update.

You need to download and install new iTunes and the Java package again, but except for that, all went flawless.

You can't (or at least not I) install Lion again from the insternal recovery partition (cmd+R), but from the USB stick it was possble.

Guys, we all seem to be collectively discovering ways of putting right the wrong and I congratulate all of you for diligently putting your additions in here. I was able to pick up on the safe boot route through reading someone elses contribution which sorted it for me.

The fact it - it was Apple issuing 10.7.3 with something wrong in it that has cost us all time, sweat, anxiety and in my case £35 to try and reslove (Applecare failed incidentally).

As we all know though - there is no chance of getting that back...

I will keep following jjust in case it re-occurs...

After updating to 10.7.3 there is no sound.
