Mobile Documents Folder Missing in 10.7.3?

I have a 13" MacBook Air and a 27" iMac that I just did the combo update to 10.7.3. Since I have updated, I am missing the mobile documents folder. If I upload a pages document to icloud.com on my iMac and then go to icloud.com on my MacBook Air, it show's the file, however, it's the default pages icon, and it doesn't give me the opportunity to download it.

Because of this, I thought I'd look in the "Mobile Documents" folder and see if I can access it from there. However not that folder is missing. I have tried many different ways to get it to show up but I've been unable to.

I'm curious if Apple realized some people were using this folder as a "Dropbox" and disabled or further hid the folder so people can't sync files back and forth. More importantly, why doesn't icloud.com work for me as it used to?

Anyone have this happen to them?

Anyone know of any tricks to get the Mobile Documents folder to show up in 10.7.3?

Please help!

I haven't updated to 7.3 yet so I can't really comment on the Mobile Documents folder, except that several 3rd party apps use that folder for iCloud compatability and I'd have to wonder how that leaves them if your case isn't just a glitch in your particular update process.

However on the issue of not being able to download a document on a mac that was uploaded from a mac, you never have been able to, you have always needed to open them on an iOS device first.

Hey childs12111 and who are having this issue,

I have the solution here, although it is a little work around - it is easy to understand.

Apple uses a system called Ubiquity - it is their code name for iCloud (according the resource of which I have posted the link below) it shows up in Activity Monitor as ubd - if this is not showing up then it means you do not have an application runnign which has an active or consistant connection with iCloud and therefore since 10.7.3 this process will be killed.

Download the application memo in the mac app store and just have that running, the connection is open continously and that way the Mobile Document folder will appear and be active with the applications as you are used to.

I have been looking for this solution, for a while and came accross this link, so I thought to share it with the community:-)

Hi Howard,

I am assuming that you have the application running? - Like the glowing dot is under the icon?

I have noticed that it does not work with all the application that support iCloud, and I can only assume that is depended on the application - I use Memo (type that into the App Store) and it works, however I also have the application ToDo by Appigo and it that app does not use a consistant connection, I am not sure why but that seems to be the case.

If you cannot find the memo app, the link is the website I posted earlier - it's a free one:-)

Hope this helps you out and makes the process clearer - If not keep asking and I will do my best to help where I can:-)

Jeff,

First of all, thank you for all of your support.

Yes, I have memo up and running. So, I do have mobile documents on my computer now. 🙂

But, I cannot sync the files. I have tried placing the files in various folders, and checking in my ipad and icloud.com to see if they appear, but they dont.

I have checked that icloud is working by creating a new document on my ipad and watching the file being created on icloud.

What tips do you have? How are you making it working for you?

Thanks,

Howard

Hi Howard,

Sorry for the delay in the post - probably has something to do with us being in a different time zone:-)

Once you are in the Mobile Document folder you will notice that their are a number of folders in there, one for each application that you own and that uses iCloud as part of the app.

All these folders have one folder in common - this is the Documents folder - You will need to place your files in there for them to sync between the different machines that you use to run the application on.

Now as far as it goes in my experience all the apps expect for the iWork apps will sync really well between the different applications except for the iWork apps, as they have not been updated yet on the Mac to handle iCloud. I can only imagine this will be done with the new release and that will probably will not happen until Mountain Lion (July-ish) will come out.

I have included a document that I wrote - only 1 page - that has some intructions with a work around for this. These instruction may seem like a big deal to do this all the time, but once you train yourself to remember to do the steps, it will come naturally (I hope) and let you use the iCloud function.

Let's see how you get on with this:-)

It is on my public Dropbox folder, so I will keep it therefore a while, so you get a change to download it.

Another way is to create a launch agent. Put the following in /Users/<username>/Library/LaunchAgents/ubd.plist and then log out and log back in:

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0">
<dict>
          <key>KeepAlive</key>
          <true/>
          <key>Label</key>
          <string>iCloud Mobile Documents Sync</string>
          <key>ProgramArguments</key>
          <array>
                    <string>/System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Ubiquity.framework/Versions/A/Support/ubd</string>
          </array>
          <key>QueueDirectories</key>
          <array/>
          <key>WatchPaths</key>
          <array/>
</dict>
</plist>

you dont need to go through a bunch of hoopla with other apps, etc to get the Mobile Documents folder back again.

I think i found a much simpler method to get "~/Library/Mobile Documents" folder sync working with 10.7.4.

warning! if you dont know what you are doing, then you probably shouldnt be doing this. You take all responsibility for nuking your own icloud data.

1. as usual, make sure you have icloud setup for your user and enable Documents & Data sync

execute next steps from Terminal (finder: Terminal):

2. run: sudo nano /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.ubd.plist - change RunAtLoad from false to true

3. run: defaults write com.apple.ubd kUBSyncEnabledKey -bool true

at this point, ubd needs to be restarted..

4. run: launchctl unload /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.ubd.plist then launchctl load /System/Library/LaunchAgents/com.apple.ubd.plist

now ~/Library/Mobile Documents should be synced up. Happy syncing...

If for some reason it's still not syncing after step 4, try logging out and back in.

Beware - proceed at your own risk. There may be a good reason why apple disabled this "functionality" in lion, such as for data safety reasons, however the conspiracy theorist in me thinks could have been something more nefarious - like that ichat beta thing on lion - it may have been beta that they wanted to turn it off so you can pay for the polished icloud feature in Mountain Lion.
