My dashboard icon has disappeared.

My Dashbord icon has disappeared from the dock. It is not in the Apps folder and although I have re-installed all Apps from the disk, it is still not there. Can anyone help please? I can't find Dashboard.app in the finder either. If I press F4 my one app appears and seems to work but I would really like the icon back in the dock.

Thanks in anticipation.

You don't really need it, you can tap the F4 key to bring it up or type Command-Tab to see what apps (including dashboard) are open then just drag to it. Also look again in the Apps folder, it should be there unless someone in your house dragged it to the Trash. You can also look in the Trash for it and drag it back to the Apps folder.

BTW PLEASE complete your profile so we at least know what version of OS X is on your system. You can do this by clicking Your Stuff in the upper right of this page then click Profile and fill it out.

Download and re-install the 10.6.8 Update Combo following the on-screen directions. As a general rule it is wise to disconnect all peripherals prior to updating or upgrading the OS. Also make sure you have an up-to-date backup.

I strongly suspect someone from your household accidentaly put it in the Trash and emptied it. Apps just don't go missing unless a user intervenes somehow.

When you tried to run it using the suggesting I provided in my first post did it come up, if it did then obviously its still on your system. Someone has just moved it somewhere. In that case you can use Finder to search for it and locate where the app is now. If you do not know how to use Finder to search let me know I'll give you some brief instructions.

If the applicaiton will not launch and cannot be found then it has been removed from your system. If it is no longer in the Trash you will need to either use Pacifist (Google it) to extract and install it or re-install the whole OS.

No the Combo Update should still be there unless you do an erase and install. If you can see your widgets then your Dashboard is working just fine. Let's do a search again in Finder, please follow these instructions:

  • Open a new Finder Window
  • Type Command - F
  • Under where it says Search this Mac change the options from Kind to Filename in the search field type in Dashboard.app and look to see if it populates. It should show Dashboard, then highlight it and look below to see where it's residing.

It should look like the following:
