Tilde (~) added to file name?

The other day, iBooks Author began creating duplicate files on save with a tilde (~) character at the end of file name. Anyone know what's going on here and how to make it stop?

I'm wondering if it has anything to do with Lion 10.7.3, which I updated to the other day, right around the same time this started happening.

The problem is the ~ files for me never disappeared (ever since latest OS upgrade). They just sit there, even after I save a version or quit iBooks Author.

Step one

Use Force Close to cause Finder to refresh

Tilde still there?

Step two

Launch Disk Utiltiy to repair your hard drive.

Tilde still there?

Delete the file and Empty Trash

Same here, tilde problem is consistently producing multiple files with exponentially growing tides on the end. Definitely a versions thing but also a bug in the software, wish I could say its the only one but it will be a few iterations of updates before its a solid prgram, at which point the price tag will change from free to $$. That's how Mac software is developed and has been since early OS 9, with exception of iTunes. I think iPhoto was free for quite a while until it became bundled in iLife. Good news is the program can build a book as advertised despite the unclean version of software. I don't think iTunes was fully clean until version 2 or so.

Don't think it is version. Versions are stored in a hidden folder named .DocumentRevisions-V100 in the root folder. This seems to be a scratch file (or cache file) generated by iBooks Author but did not get hidden or deleted.

Don't think iBooks Author will ever be non-free. It's existence is to sell iBooks, just like iTunes is free is to sell music and media contents.

Hi,

I'm seeing exactly the same issue, but on top of the annoying extra file with a tilde (which I am having to constantly delete), iBooks Author is now taking a looong time to save (30 seconds plus).

Disk space will certainly become an issue for me as the project I'm currently working on is nearly 1GB and it is not even close to half done.

This issue was not present for me prior to updating to 10.7.3.

Waiting patiently for an update.

That seems right. I recently noticed a similar issue with TextEdit files, and I made it stop:

- Preferences

- Open and Save

- When Saving a File:

= Delete the automatic backup file

Could this be what's going on with iBooks Author? (I don't have Lion, don't think I have iBooks Author.)

I believe that when the document is saved, the last previously saved version is renamed with a tilde at the end, and then the current version is saved. (This is different from the autosave file, which shows up in Finder with (Autosave) after the filename, but is then deleted when the document is saved explicitly.) There is only one "backup" file (with a tilde). Each time the document is saved, the previous version becomes the tilde/backup.

Because my files are small, I've decided not to delete the backups.
