apple ids for ipads

We just bought 10 ipad for classroom use. What is the best way to manage apple ids for a series of 1-10 non-user specific devices?

each device needs to have a unique Apple ID to ensure iTunes licensing compliance. To my knowledge there is currently nothing which would prevent the kids from logging out of the classroom iTunes account, and logging back in to a personal one. If you haven't already, you should probably consider a sync cart( connected to a host computer) to charge, store and backup the devices. The backups will be important. not sure what age the students are, but if they are anything like my 13 year old daughter, you will need to restore the device to the initial image frequently😉

it depends on your goals with email. Exchange server can be used to audit the device and wipe them in the event of loss..in our environment, for auditing purposes we currently have to have one and only one exchange account tied to each device...

one way we found out about to deal with multiple apple id's was to give each device a unique apple id, ( say something like device_serial_number@my_mail_host.com )then create an alias on your mail server for each address pointing to a master account that would receive all of the correspondence directed to the apple id mail address...

The EULA for the education volume store does not require you to have a unique apple id for each device.

(iv) You shall be able to manually sync App Store Products from at least one iTunes-authorized device to iOS Devices that have manual sync mode, provided that the App Store Product is associated with an Account on the primary iTunes-authorized device, where the primary iTunes-authorized device is the one that was first synced with the iOS Device or the one that you subsequently designate as primary using the iTunes application.

1. You need to buy one license for an App for each iOS device if that device is used by multiple users or one license of an App per user if that user is using multiple devices.

2. Your organization can authorize a single iTunes account on up to 5 computers. Your organization can thus store the purchased Apps on up to 5 computers and synch iOS devices from those 5 computers. There is thus no need to buy an App multiple times just because your organization wants to store and synch that App from a single employee's laptop and desktop computer.

3. You can authorize a single computer for more than one iTunes account and then synch Apps from up to 5 iTunes accounts to your iOS devices. On the iOS devices in the Store section of the Settings app you can log out of one iTunes account, log into another iTunes account and then purchase or redownload Apps using the App Store app. It is thus possible to put Apps on a employee's iPhone that were purchased with the employee's personal iTunes account as well as those purchased with a company iTunes account.

Gyr, Thanks for the clarification on the educations vs. business VPP. My experience is in an enterprise environment and in all our conversations with Apple, and in our attorney's reading of the business EULA we've been told that the 1 Apple ID per device is a requirement to ensure compliance with Point 1. Honestly one of our other concerns was a practical one of trying to manage device with multiple Apple ID's on them in a shared use case, particularly when they might need to be "re-imaged" frequently and brought back to some base configuration. I agree, too, that simply syncing with multiple computers doesn't imply a need to buy a license for each computer you sync with, the business VPP is the same. .Anyway, thanks for the clarification. 😉 I'm all for whatever will make deployments simpler.

I found this section of the iOS 4 Education Deployment Guide

http://images.apple.com/education/docs/20110727_IOS_4_Education_Deployment_Guide .pdf

which has a lot of great info in it everywhere, but the key paragraph that deals with the allowed use of a single Apple ID on multiple devices (with multiple users of each device) is the following one from Page 19

Education institutions have the option of redeeming one app code per iTunes authorized computer, or “sync station,” and retaining the rest of the codes as proof of purchase.

This way a single master Apple ID could be used, the devices synced to that( for cloning purposes), and a sufficient number of licenses, once for each clone, could be purchased. This is a big difference from the business VPP, but something that would really great to use in a business shared use case.
