How do you make the top margin .5" on page 1 and 1.0" on all of the following pages?

I have been a PC user since 1987 and find the iWorks programs far less intuitive than the MS Office products. I have been using a Word doc template, which I customized back in 1990, and all of my client records use this template. So, as I am converting to Apple, I need to find a way to adapt the iWorks Pages to accomodate my doc needs, if that is possible. As indicated in the question, I need to set the top margin on page 1 to .5" and, using either a section break or a page break, enable the top margin to be 1.0" on all of the following pages. I read somewhere on the net that this might be accomplished by using a layout break but, when I tried that, the margins on all pages seemed to still be connected to each other. Is there a way to accomplish my objective?

I apologize Fruhulda but here the app behave the way described by Jeff.

After a section break or a layout one, the added margin apply only to the page which is just after the xx break.

From my point of view, it's at least an oddity, at worst a bug.

If we define a columns count after such a break, it apply to every pages until a new break.

Left an right margins defined the same apply the same way.

It seems odd that top/bottom margins don't behave the same.

So, to achieve with Pages (which isn't inferior to Word but different, exactly as a black man isn't inferior to a white one) what the OP is accustomed to achieve with Word there are several schemes.

Scheme 1

define the document's top margin to 1" and insert a text box in page i whose top edge will be at .5" of the page top.

Scheme 2

Define the document with a 35 points top margin.

At bottom of page 1, insert a section break.

In the section #2 uncheck the box "Use the preceeding header/footer".

Define the font in use in the footer to the value of your choice if you want to insert data in it, press return,

put the cursor in the header's 1st line and define the parameter space after so that the header's bottom edge reach the 1" location.

This way every other pages will behave exactly as if the margin was 1"

Back to page #1, put the cursor in the header, select all then reduce the font height to 1 point.

So, the top margin will be 35 points + 1 point (36 points is .5").

I'm always reluctant to speak of possible bug.

At first, as I tested only columns, I didn't wrote the word but when I saw that left and right margins which are in the same part of the Inspector apply to every pages but top margin "before" to first one I thought of a possible bug.

Are you knowing what is achieved when we define the margin "after" ?

I tried to change the value but nothing changed in the doc.

The "before" setting controls a vertical whitespace between the layout for which it is set and the preceding layout. The "after" does the same with regards the following layout, but it won't show up if there isn't a following layout yet.

If the layout break coincides with a page break, the whitespace appears as a margin, but it can be in the middle of the page if that is where the layout break falls.

Thanks.

Now I understand.

But I continue to think that something is wrong.

When we have two columns, the text flow from the left one to the right one at the bottom of every page with no action.

From my point of view this means that there is a bottom of column in every page.

So, according to what is written in the Guide, it would be logical to get the margin at top of every page;

I think that I will file a report.

Peter,

First let me say how much I appreciate all of the time and effort you, Jeff, and Yvan have given trying to get this problem worked out. I am attaching two screen prints of an actual file I use for one of my clients. I have created a template with all of the necessary formating so when I get a new client I can just fill in the primary details on the first page and, then, record the details of my periodic contacts with the client, as they occur. Due to the nature of my business, I need to retain details of my client contacts to protect myself in the event of an Errors and Omissions suit. If I am ever involved in one of those suits, a printout of the file for that client would enable the court to determine the facts of the case. So, this matter of formatting is not just an idle passtime but helpful in the fulfillment of my legal needs. So far, it appears, from the conversation thread, it's not a question of whether I can do what I need to do but, rather, a question of the best way to accomplish the desired result. Thanks again for your help.

I take it that the page with the table on it is the first page?

Then simply line it up with the top and apply Wrap so that it pushes the fiollowing text down. You seem to have done this by hitting lots of returns which is crude and can push the layout out of position.

Also Tables don't have to have all the divisions showing, you can either turn all off, the internal borders or just those you don't want to see by changing the cell borders to none.

Here is how to set up a template for a letterhead where you have a unique first page followed by the standard following pages:

You don't have a letterhead but the principle is the same.

So, your problem is not a margin one.

You just have to insert a section break between page 1 and page 2.

In the Inspector of Layout > Sections

uncheck the box "Uncheck the header/footer from preceeding section"

This way you may define the contents of the Header in use from page 2 to the last one.

As long as you insert a return at the right end of the header contents, you would be able to adjust the header height so that it's bottom will be at 1" from the top of page.

If your problem was described accurately in your first quetion it would be solved long time ago.
