How do I transfer large voice memos from iPhone to my computer?

I have a fiarly large file that is from a lecture series that I wish to download on my computer. How do I locate and transfer this file in Windows? I have already tried the 'Include Voice Memos' option and do not get to see the Voice Memo Playlists in iTunes. Also, since this file is over 3hrs long in duration, there is no way that this can be mailed without loosing a considerable portion of it.

iPhone 4, iOS 5.0.1

I was struggling with this for a long time and found a very simple solution that worked for me... 😎 Dropbox! Setup a free Dropbox account and download the free app on your iOS device.

1. Go to Voice Memos and tap / select the memo you want to transfer to Dropbox.

2. Tap the "share icon" under the play button (to the left of Edit). Then, tap on the "More ..." button below Message and Mail. Then, slide the "Save to Dropbox" toggle to green and select Done. The "Save to Dropbox" icon will appear right under the Message and Mail icon.

3. Now, tap "Save to Dropbox", it will ask you what folder you'd like to place it in. It will upload the file to Dropbox, which you can access via any computer's web browser. 🙂

Hope this helps!

Dont waste your time with third party software.

Here's what worked for me (and others if you read this whole thread):

-Go into the voice memo app on your phone

-Click the arrow next to the voice memo you want to sync.

-Click the box "trim memo". Wait a couple seconds until the grayed out "trim memo" box returns to dark lettering.

-Go back to your memos and do the same to all the ones you want to sync. if you try to exit or go back before the trimming is complete, the app will not complete the trim operation or will crash.

-Close the app.

-Sync your phone. The voice memos will be transferred to your itunes folder and named with the date and time they were recorded.

This is a glitch that has something to do with the length of long voice memos not syncing until they are trimmed.

But the trim you will do does not change the total length so Apple should fix this for sure.

1- Connect phone to computer.

2- Open iTunes. It should automatically start 'syncing' your phone to iTunes. That means it is copying the files on your phone to your iTunes folder. Up at the top of the iTunes window you might see something like this happening:

User uploaded file

If you don't see it syncing, go to the iTunes menu bar and scroll down to "Sync (so and so's) iPHONE"

3- Now Look at the left menu column under 'Devices'. You should see your iPhone listed there.

Check to see that in the Backup section in the window on the right you've checkedthe box 'Back up to this computer'.

plus

Under 'Options' you've checked 'Open iTunes when this iPhone is connected', and 'Manually manage music and videos' (see the picture below):

4 - Under 'Devices' click on the little arrow to the left of the iPhone icon. A dropdown menu should appear that looks something like this:

User uploaded file

5- Click on the one called 'Voice Memos' and you should be able to see your recorded audios in the window to the right.

User uploaded file

However these are not the actual files but links to them. iTunes automatically creates a folder called 'Voice Memos' where it stores your actual voice memo files.

If you want to find those files so you can do something with them, you can find where they are stored inside your comp this way:

6- Open up a new window of your hard drive (outside of iTunes) and type 'Voice Memos' in the search bar at the top of the window to see where they are kept.

When you look at the very bottom of the window it shows you where the files are actually stored - and which file is inside which.

It's usually inside the 'Music' folder, then the iTunes folder is inside of that, then inside the iTunes Music folder you should find the actual 'Voice Memos' folder that contains your files.

You'll notice that voice memo files are in the .m4a format.

7- If you want to convert them to .mp3 or .aif files, you can do that in iTunes, just as you would with any other music file.

Here's how to do that:

A- Go back to iTunes,

B- Go to the very bottom of the left menu to your Playlists Section (not the 'Devices' section this time).

A playlist called 'Voice Memos' should already be there. Click on it and you should see the same files that are on your phone. Select the ones you want to convert.

Now go to the iTunes menu bar at the top, where it says Advanced and then scroll down and select "Create (MP3) Version".

A duplicate file will be created that will be located in the same location as the original. (If you want to create an AIF or WAV Version instead, you can change that in Preferences.)

Here's how:

Make sure you're in iTunes. Go to the top menu bar where it says iTunes/scroll down to Preferences and when the window pops up, under 'General', look for the button that says; "Import Settings" and click on it (see screenshot below):

User uploaded file

Once you click on it the import settings window will appear:

User uploaded file

Where it says, "Import Using:" you can change the setting by pressing down on the bar and scrolling down till you find the file type you want it to become (AIF, WAV, etc). and hit 'OK'.

Now go back to your Voice Memo Playlist again and select your .m4a file (don't double click it).

Then repeat what you did in #7, but now it should give you the option of creating the type of file you just told it to "Import Using" in Preferences.

Hope that helps!

Okay, I see the complaints, and all the recommendations, and other software. But here's what I do under Windows 7... it seems pretty easy:

  1. First, you do have to have "Voice Memos" synced to your iTunes:
    User uploaded file
  2. If you didn't have it checked and now have checked it, you need to do a sync. Syncing is what brings them over from your iPhone to your PC.
  3. Go to your iTunes Library. Don't know where it is? Go to Edit -> Preferences, then click Advanced, and see "iTunes Media folder location. Copy that, open up a Windows Explorer (I like the easy short-cut: Windows Key + E), and you'll see all your iTunes music in folders.
  4. Scroll down to the V's (or just press the V key and it should scroll down there pretty close), and see:
    User uploaded file
  5. Double-click to open the folder, and they should be right there:
    User uploaded file
  6. You can work with them right where they are, you can copy them to another folder, or if you want to get rid of them from your iPhone, cut-and-paste (Move) them to another folder. When you re-sync your iPhone, I think they drop off (that part I haven't researched to be sure of, but seems logical!).

Good luck! This should work!

Hello to all. The memo transfer thing became a real problem for us, as well. So, we did some searching and came across PhoneView. We downloaded the demo version to check it out first and it worked flawlessly in retrieving our 2 hour Voice Memo recording. Eventhough we love iTunes, PhoneView worked without the use of iTunes and allowed us to save the Voice Memo anywhere we chose on our computer. The App costs $30, but was well worth it. PhoneView.

Here's a link to their screencast: phoneview.mov

Hope this helps!

I tried a couple of the options suggested here, but finally tried something no one else has mentioned. I opened Windows Explorer on my computer, and opened the following files: Music, My Music, iTunes, iTunes Media, Voice Memos. There I found the memo for which I was looking. It had synced to the computer, but not to iTunes. In iTunes, I clicked on File, Add File to Library, located the file and added it. Now it is in the music library, it did not go into the Voice Memo folder, but made its own. I'm still working on getting it into the Voice Memo folder, as I certainly don't want a bunch of individual folders of voice memos.

Hi,

This completely solved it for me. (None of the itunes solutions mentioned here had worked for me!)

Download the app mentioned on the bottom of the page, open it and your device will appear listed in there. Voice Memos appear under the Recordings folder, you can drag and drop to you desktop. It works perfect.

The iTunes under windows did not offer the options described above, hence I searched the web to find:

http://www.i-funbox.com/

Looks like this is the swiss army knife I needed, the voice memo issue is resolved (and it offers tons more)

Ist works and it is free.

I love my Apple stuff and I hate the Galaxy I have to use for work- but why is some stuff so quirky with iTunes?

After several hours I finally decided to try out Touch Copy, a little sceptical due to the lack of reviews about it.
Literally managed to copy everything I needed in seconds, so thanks to all who recommended and anyone else struggling, I urge you to give it a go rather than waste many hours of your life like so many of us have.

PS Apple - It's been 3 years now. Sort this out.
