What is the best replacement for iDVD
I just bought a new iMac and found out that iDVD has vanished. What's the best approch for making slide shows from iPhoto and burning to a DVD?

I have iPhoto 11 and it has iDVD.
I read a similar post not long ago. Somebody mentioned Toast. Another person said if you have an older copy of iDVD from, say, a Snow Leopard age computer, it would still work.
Unfortunately Apple kind of jumped the gun on abandoning DVDs. Even if they are not going to use them anymore I still know older generation people who have a technology limit of "stick this in the DVD player slot and press the button with the arrow on it".
iDVD is available on the iLife 11 disk.

From reading about this it seems that it is on the iLife11 box set you can still buy, but was not included in iLife that came with newer computers.
Yes, Apple dropped iDVD and iWeb from inclusion with Lion; however, they still sell the iLife 11 retail disk at the Apple store online (not the app store); there are also many online resellers who sell it. I've seen it for as little as $25 on Amazon. I purchased it because I use iDVD regularly and there is no substitute available which has the same capabilities (customizable themes/menus) and I wanted a way to reinstall if necessary. I also have Roxio Toast and although it has many features, its' few menu choices are too simplistic for me. I do use it for burning though.
The only comparable substitutes for iDVD would be professional applications for movie production companies (with an appropriate price).
I've sent feedback to Apple requesting they reconsider:
Can anyone actually name an application we can use instead of iDVD? And no, I don't mean Toast...
iMovie.
2nd babowas comments, iMovie HD was a great product and a lot got lost/dropped with the 'upgrade' to iMovie. I also use iDVD a lot and can't think of a better way (and I also keep iMovie HD for that same reason)
Yep, I still use the 6.04 version - I've tried the newer ones - arrgghh! The editing just isn't precise enough...
well are you using imovie 11?
if your using imove from an earlier version, then idvd was with that box set of ilife.
I have both iMovie HD (v. 6.04) and iMovie 11 (v. 9.02 I believe) installed and use both.
What do my iMovie installations have to do with your statement that iMovie can be used as a replacement for iDVD to burn to DVD?
i am sorry... I thought you were the orig poster.
No problem; but, you haven't answered my question: why did you say that iMovie is a replacement for iDVD - you cannot burn with it.
If you want to burn to a DVD, you need either iDVD or another burn (authoring/encoding) software.
