What is the best replacement for iDVD
I just bought a new iMac and found out that iDVD has vanished. What's the best approch for making slide shows from iPhoto and burning to a DVD?

You mean a burn folder to be burned in Finder or Disk Utility? No, unfortunately, wouldn't work - in order to burn a DVD that can be watched in any DVD player/TV, it needs to be authored and encoded and Finder can't handle that - you could only watch your movie on the Mac you created if burned in Finder.
Hence the need for iDVD, Toast, or any other authoring/encoding software.....
is that true for a dvd-r disc too?
The disc is not the problem - the software used to burn has to be able to author and encode the video content properly so you can watch it in any player and/or TV. Finder can't do that; it can do data disks (just files/folders) and it can do the video if you only want to watch it on your Mac.
ok i am wrong... I am sorry. I really thought there was way with imovie. I will have to play with it when I have a moment. I do like Roxio, and often have used Toast. so I dont know why i thought it was possible with imovie.
No problem - I just happened to know because I do a lot of video editing and using all the applications associated with that kind of thing....
Carlo TD, iMovie has nothing to do with iDVD! You can't make menus, or themes or anything like that... it's not a dvd authoring program like iDVD!
So... several years later now. I just switched to Mac and am wondering if there is a solution to this issue yet?
Money is not a concern (obviously, I just bought a Mac). Is there something out there that is easy to use, and has good menu themes? (Time is an issue).
