How can I make the cell fill transparent but keep the data (text, number) solid and visible?

I'm trying to make a cell or table fill transparent without affecting the text within the cell. The data has to remain readable. I only need the background fill to be transparent. The opacity slider affects fill and input data alike. How do I accomplish this?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), 10.7.1

Select all cells in the table and set their fill to "white"

Select the table (by clicking its icon in the sheets list). Set the fill to 'none'

Select the individual cells you want to become transparent. Set the fill to 'none'

The blue rectangle is a shape, placed behind the table. it shows through the cells whose fill has been set to 'none',
