Wow it's been so long that I have been out of the tech game. Thank you for replying because I had no idea about sniffer software over public wifi. Do you know if that form of software has access to all of your phone information while you are online or does it only access information that you transfer.
A packet sniffer can only see what gets send over the connection, but if that includes an email connect packet with your user ID and password then someone has access to your email account. If your address book is on your provider's server they can get that also.
In addition, the WSJ reported last week that some approved apps for the iPhone upload your address book. They are supposed to ask permission, but not all do. It's pretty common for social networking sites to take your address book so they can invite your contacts to link to you; for your convenience, of course. And again, they are supposed to ask first.
If you use public hotspots you should only access sites and email servers that support SSL encryption. It is secure (meaning it hasn't been broken - yet). My email provider, Verizon, recently switched to SSL, but most still do not support it.
Now I'm having another issue that I'm finding with the email. I believe it's related. Whenever I open a web page or maps or anything Internet related it fetches my email. Even tho it wasn't running in the background all settings including advanced settings are set to manual fetch. Push is off. Why is this happening. so now that this occurs when I'm using public wifi for web browsing it auto checks my email. And with sniffer software I don't want that. I have also deleted and recreated the account on the iPhone as well. Not sure what else to do other than a restore which I would prefer not to do.
It will also check it if you open your contacts.
Best thing to do would be to delete all accounts and use webmail instead.
There are no known malware running in iOS environment, just deal with this.
This is not because the os is flawless, but this is the actual situation.
So your problem is probably located elsewhere.
It could be interesting to find out where exactly ...
I just had this exact same thing happen to my iphone today. When I opened my mail it was showing up in icloud mail or on my mail app.
I did have to change my appleid password this morning (oddly enough), so I'm not sure it it was connected or not.
I held the home and sleep button down/ restarted and opened my mail on the phone and now its been fixed!
Thank you,
Why did you have to change your appleid password? If it was because you received an email telling you to change it, that was a phishing email, for the purpose of stealing your account ID. If you responded to an email rather than going to iTunes and clicking on your account name your account has now been stolen.
My iPhone 4S has been doing the same thing but so is my mother's 3GS.
I have the exact problem that you have. I just bought an iphone 4s this month. Now i am sending get wealthy emails to my contacts as well. Never had this happen before. Did you have any luck with a solution or source of the problem? My gut tells me its from a "free app" , but who knows. Thanks
Are you using a Hotmail account by any chance? They've had a fair few issues with their accounts getting hacked and used to send emails with malware links in them, it seems like every other day I get an email from a friend telling me they "did it!" and are now earing "$2000 a day!"
Not accusing or anything, just a helpful FYI
I could copy and paste your problem exactly. I just got my iphone 4s this month. Doing exactly as you say. I'm sending emails to all of my contacts about "Online business opportinity for you" and "No experince necessary, you earn money fast with this 20 minute system" and "Tips to make money at home". never had this happen before. Been with the same email address for at least 10 years. Did you find a solution, or source of the problem? My gut says its from a "free app". Thanks for your time.
Not hotmail. Yahoo Mail
This also happens with Yahoo mail periodically, I got one from a friend recently linking to a Canadian pharmacy.
Well this is revealing. I have 4S and all was ok with Yahoo until I downloaded from AppStore music app which downloads music straight to phone from website. All was ok for a few days. Something must have been sleeping.
Now at 3 am every day my yahoo account on iPhone sends messages to my address book. Definitely a virus. I changed my password y'day but today same thing I'll give it smother day and see before I delete the account see if that helps.
But basically I see that by downloading "free" music - note this app is top 20 in app store- it circumvents any controls.
Hopefully it was not tracking my keystrokes.
Right trying to get latest info on iphone security. Seems at this stage still virus free in the wild and therefore no virus software avaliable/needed. This does not mean there arent problems closely associated with security and using iphone. Ie email accounts being compromised; snifer software collecting on transmits in public wiifi next works; internet sites being hijacked and redirecting iphones etc. Is this a fair summary? Hard to find definitive reliable info on topic. Major security companys and apple itself seem less than outspoken on giving advice on topic. I assume that might be because they know virus possible but they dont want to encourage anything in the wild and/or worry people and/or they dont want to say safe and next day what they know possible happens. Anyway i just want to make sure i am doing all reasonable to ensure security. I dont use my iphone 4 for any emails. Dont connect to public networks. Do do a lot of browsing, playing musicfinancial transactions, texting, skype, calls of corse, and playing games. All apps from apple istore. Keep software uptodate. Is there anything else i could easily or reasonably do to ensure security?
