iphone 4 mail with error message cannot get mail the user name or password for "apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com" is incorrect.

On my iPhone 4, I recently downloaded the game app, Zynga Poker (same company who produced Words With Friends). The game app requires players to sign in with their Facebook account or sign in as Guest, I chose to sign in with the Facebook account. I have been playing the game for about a month, for some reason, it won't let me login to the game... but it is asking me to login with a different Facebook account, I chose not to. What I don't understand is this, the e-mail I used for the Facebook, all of the sudden gave me an error message on my iPhone saying that your mail cannot be accessed/updated with that e-mail account. All of the other e-mails I use on my iPhone can update and receive mails automatically just fine, but with that particular e-mail account it keeps having error notices pop up on my iphone (quite annoying); I tried changing the web-mail password from my laptop, and then tried changing the e-mail account password on my iPhone 4, it doesn't work; I tried deleting the account and re-creating it, it still doesn't work.

I tried resolving the issue by the doing the following Step-by-Step on my iPhone 4 AFTER I have changed my webmail from my laptop:

1. Touched 'Settings'

2. Touched 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'

3. Touched the e-mail account I am having issues with.

4. Touched the 'Account myemailaddress@yaho... >' button

5. Changed my password to correspond with what I had changed on my webmail - on my laptop.

6. A window pops up and displays the following:

'Cannot Get Mail

The user name or password for

"apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com' is

incorrect.'

I tried resolving the issue by deleting the account and re-adding it on my settings by doing the following:

1. Touched 'Settings'

2. Touched 'Mail, Contacts, Calendars'

3. Touched 'Add Account... >'

4. Touched the 'Yahoo!' button

5. Didn't enter under 'Name,' but entered under 'Address,' and entered my new password under 'Password."

6. A window pops up and displays the following:

'Cannot Get Mail

The user name or password for

"apple.imap.mail.yahoo.com' is

incorrect.'

I have paid this ridiculous new fee of $69.00 for Apple Care and called the tech support, NONE of them have a clue! I have looked up several discussion forums, a lot of people/users/customers have the same exact problem, but no solution to resolve this! No articles from Apple, no solutions from Apple, nothing.

The tech support responded with this, "Apple will only post an article about this issue only if there is enough of complaints about it..." I then responded with this, "I think Apple should not only write an article but write a new patch to resolve this problem even if it's A complaint from ONE customer! That way, which I'm sure the same problem will re-occur again, it will SAVE BOTH the Tech Supporters', MY TIME, and OTHER CUSTOMERS' time in the future! It's ridiculous that they put me on hold three times for a total of TWO HOURS trying to get this problem solved, and what do I get in the end AFTER PAYING $69.00, and TWO HOURS OF MY LIFE that I will NEVER get back??? Is this, "I'm sorry, we cannot help you."

Great job Apple, just FANTASTIC, ingenious how you rob people of THEIR MONEY AND TIME in a time like this where our economic situation is at the bottom of the barrel!!!!

Responding to the half of your post that wasn't a rant, try the following:

Re-delete the account from mail
Do a reset: Hold the home and power buttons at the same time until the Apple boot logo appears. No data will be lost
Try re-adding the account after it reboots



I'm experiencing the same issue - I changed my e-mail password after Yahoo got hacked, changed my password in settings on my MacBook, iPad and iPhone. Now when I try to get mail on my phone or iPad, I get a message saying that my e-mail username or password is incorrect. I go to settings, find that the password is not correct (different number of letters than the one I use), I re-enter the password, and then it works - until the next time. I'm going to try the solution suggested by SteveJobsFan0123 - will post the results.

I had the same problem. After changing my password because of security scares and turning on 2-step verification for my Gmail. Since I had 2-step verification on Gmail, I couldn't get my gmail on my European iphone 4 to work anymore, it gave me the false username and password error message. I literally had to go to Google on the web and turn off the 2-step verification for my account. I then set up my gmail account on my iphone4 again (first deleting the old account in settings) and it worked with my user/password. I then went back to the web-based application for gmail and turned the 2-step verification back on. This was the ONLY way to get the **** Gmail working on my 2nd European iphone 4. Very annoying, it took me 1 hour to figure out that the 2-step verification was the actual problem.

Holy cow. So sorry. I usually try the communities first and then call Apple support if the advice is at all complicated. I'm much less adept than you are -- also less brave.

if you recently changed your email password on anything other than your phone, just go to settings, mail, and under accounts, tap the email you're trying to access. Example: for Yahoo, tap it, then tap "Account", tap password, clear it then enter the new password you used on your other device. FIXED!

I recently had this problem. I have an iphone 4 and use IOS 7.1. It turns out yahoo no longer supports IOS 7. So since the Iphone 4 can not upgrade to IOS 8 or above, your only option is to reduce the yahoo security settings.

If you go to your yahoo mail account and click settings/account security then select the option that says "Allow apps that use less secure sign in"

This should allow you to resume normal access to your e-mail via apple IMAP.
