Expensive, cludgy, but available now. About $300, when you add the cost of the Thunderbolt cable from Apple.
Wow. Exnpensive and too bulky. Will wait a bit more for the smaller version. Thanks for the help. Aloha
A week ago I bought a 15 inch MacBook Pro and to my surprise I could not plug in my external hard drive as my new Mac came with only a Thunderbolt connection and the Fire Wire one was eliminated. I have seen a converter plug in the Apple community but can't remember where. It looks pretty slick and costs about $10.
Personally, I went to Fry's and was told that I had the old version Fire Wire plug. They sold me a FireWire 800 9-Pin to 6-Pin by SIIG which connects FireWire 400/800 devices to FireWire400/800 systems. It doesn't mention Thunderbolt. I just tried it out a few minutes ago and my new Mac is able to read my ancient back-up hard drive. The cable costs $15. Monika
Thanks but my new MBA doesn't have firewire connection. Wanted to have something that can convert firewire 800 to thunderbolt. Couple of options: wait until summer for the release of the sonnet adapter, purchase a new video cam or purchase a thunderbolt display...the latter is way too much money. Will standby for now until a better alternative comes out. Aloha and thanks for the info.
I've been searching for such a device too. I need to perform a data transfer to MBA from a MBP and FW800 drive. For now, I can hook it up to a MBP and use AirDrop or simple wireless transfer...

The Belkin Dock looks promising, but still expensive. Simple adapters are still aways and the first ones out are going to cost a pretty penny still (~$30-$40 is my guess). The dock from Belkin may be worth the cost in that sense. Except it seems to need an external power source.
Sigh, Thunderbolt hasn't really come out with a bang, but just more of a sizzle...sorry for the pun.
Someone had come up with a concept Apple Thunderbolt Pro Display. It was pretty cool. Built-in discrete graphics card, bluray superdrive, and all the ports you would ever need (among other things). Oh how I wish Apple would be willing to build such a thing.
Anways, let me know if you find a simple TB to FW800 adapter.
I have the new Thunderbolt to Ethernet cable for my daughter's new MacBook Air which works great. BUT still no Apple Thunderbolt to FW800 cable - that is supposed to be available (for $29???) in July 2012 - guess it's a long month and may not come out until 25 July 2012 -- isn't that the same day ML…??

Have you tried searching for express card to firewire as an interrim? There are a couple available.
I have not found a single cable to do the job. You will have to purchase a 6' long Firewire 9-6 Pin Cable and an Apple Thunderbolt to Firewire Adapter (5" long). Each cost about $30.00 from Apple. You can also purchase the 6' Firewire 9-6 Pin Cable from Amazon for $10.95 ea.
