I would like to unlearn the spelling of some words.
In various posts I read about a contextual menu entry called "Unlearn Spelling" but I can't find it anywhere.
So, can anyone tell me how to unlearn words?
Does anyone know how to bring up the Unlearn menu item?
Or is there any other way to unlearn words?

you can only unlearn words that you have learned before. They are in your user dictionary (the one in ~/Library/Spelling, in your Home folder).
You can test this with TextEdit:
1. Type a nonsensical word.
2. Right-click and choose "Learn Spelling" from the contest menu.
3. Right-click and choose "Unlearn Spelling" from the context menu.
If this was not the reason for your problem, please post again.

this might well be since you don't have the spell checker enabled in Pages.
In the context menu in your screenshot, under "Spelling", you should first tick "Check Spelling as You Type".
I have the same problem. For whatever reason, "gunownership" was never in the U.S. English dictionary, but "gunownershipr" (notice the "r" at the end) is.
I didn't tell the dictionary to learn this word, so it's not in my LocalDictionary, and I have no idea how to remove this. I've now had "gunownership" added to the local dictionary so that it won't keep correcting it to "gunownershipr", but "gunownershipr" is still treated as a correct spelling and gets suggested as an alternative if I misspell "gunownership".
Did my copy of Yosemite ship with a faulty dictionary? How do I correct this?
Type the word you want to unlearn, right-click on it, and the Unlearn Spelling option will appear. I tested in TextEdit, so I'm not sure if that is the only place you can use it.
That is what all the other posts I've read suggested, but, as I said, it does not appear on my Mac.
I've tried it in TextEdit and Mail, to no avail.
When I try this, I have no "unlearn" option to click on. Is there any other way?
When in TextEdit the word shows up as being mispelled, but in Pages it still shows up as a correct spelling.
Hmmm, I also have the "Spelling as You Type" enabled. I have a feeling this is a harder issue to correct than it was to mess up

I have the same problem with a word with a 'g' added on the end.
Can't remove it and doesn't appear in any custom dictionary file I can find

I have same issue. The word I have that Pages fails to underline is not in my user dictionary files. TextEdit correctly underlines is as misspelled. Pages does not. I assumed both worked with the same spelling system but it appears there must be some difference.
Now, how to make Pages recognise the incorrectly spelled word?
