AppleId Password Rules

Rule #4 of the AppleID password restrictions states "Not contain more than 3 consecutive identical characters" - Please Apple, fix your wording! Your rule is actually "Not contain 3 or more consecutive identical characters". "more than 3" would allow 3 consecutive characters, but it turns red ( invalid ) if this is attempted. Embarrassing that Apple got this wrong.

Also, rule #1 states "Have at least one letter", which in standard English would include Upper and Lower case letters, but Apple's rule requires it to be "Have at least one lower case letter", while rule #2 "Have at least one capital letter" does correctly specify requiring at least one upper case. Thank You Apple when you fix this.

As I think about this restriction, I would actually like Apple to allow 3 consecutive identical characters and use a clearly written rule to "Not contain 4 or more consecutive identical characters". I have a historic password that breaks 3 of their current rules ( but it is still very strong! ). With their 6 rules including #6 "Be at least 8 characters", allowing 3 consecutive character would not really decrease the strength.

To document, the current rules are written:

Have at least one letter

Have at least one capital letter

Have at least one number

Not contain more than 3 consecutive identical charaters

Not be the same as the account name

Be at least 8 characters

When creating a password, there are dots in front of each rule that are red if the password does not satisfy the rule, and green if it is OK.

And to be fanatic about wording, if they keep the current restrictions, a wording of:

"Not contain 3 consecutive identical characters"

is logically the same at "Not contain 3 or more consecutive identical characters"

"Not contain 3 consecutive identical characters" is Logically the same as "Not contain 3 or more consecutive identical characters"

but realize that a semantics purist could argue that "aaaa" does Not contain 3 consecutive identical characters, it contains "4 consecutive identical characters"

And a lawyer could argue that saying "I'm not dating any one else" is true if you are dating two others.

We can note when and what changes Apple makes to the wording for password rules.

And we could discuss this topic until Godwin's Law applies. ( keep memetics alive! )

Agreed!

If you like your current password, don't change it. I learned the hard way...
