silly. all my other applications close just fine when i click on the red dot. not Power Point. i have to force close. just annoying thats all. is this a sign something else is wrong? not so tech savvy.

Difficult to tell, without details. One possible cause is Internet connection. Eg, upon quitting, Office 2008 apps attempt to communicate on the Internet to check the validity of the licence. If this is blocked by a firewall or in some other way, it can take a while before the app decides to give up and quit.

In my book, helping a community member to use Microsoft Word (or any other legal third party software) effectively on his Mac certainly qualifies as helping him to get the most out of his Apple product."
thanks fane_j. i happen to agree especially as i experience microsoft issues that are unique to mac. i used a pc until about 8 months ago. if templeton had read my question more thoroghly, i am concerned that the powerpoint issue is a symptom of another problem with my mac. particularly since installing lion i have had issues that occured directly as a result of that upgrade that were "unintended." in any case, i think its an excellent idea to ask the question on the office for mac forum as well. will do. thanks Temp!

Programs don't close by clicking on the Red X, that's a Windows thing. That only closes the windows you are/were working in.
The program remains open.
Are you having a problem closing a Window or shutting down the Program after the window you were working is closed?
If Power Point is still open after you close the windows you were working in just hit Command+Q keys and it should close.
If someone wants help with a Mircosoft product, the best place to post those questions is on the Mircosoft forums. Those forums are obviously more focused on the applications at hand and also have MS appointed MVPs there to help.
Would you post a question about Mac OS X on a Microsoft forum? Probably not.

I'm sorry but you are mistaken. It is not a Power Point problem it is a OS X problem and or user error on a Mac.
Do you expect a Microsoft/Windows MVP to know anything about Mac's. I doubt it.
The OP is under the impression that by clicking the Red X in the upper left hand corner of the window that closes the program. That only happens with some Apps on Mac and always happens in Windows.
Would you post a question about Mac OS X on a Microsoft forum? Probably not.
And that is exactly what you are suggesting he do.

Maybe, but it's not the issue. There's a world of difference between laying down the law -- Asking questions about MS apps is here streng verboten! (And trespassers will be tied up with piano wire!), especially when one is in no way entitled to do so -- and suggesting that there might be a better chance of finding the right answer in a forum dedicated to those apps.

It certainly is. But remember to post specific details.
First, what version of the OS and what version of PP are you using? (I can infer from one of your post that you're using v10.7, but I shouldn't have to do that.)
Second, describe exactly what you are doing and what happens. From your post it sounds like Shootist007 is right, and you expect PP to quit when you click the window close button, which is not how the Mac paradigm works. But you also say that other applications do quit like that, which is unusual. Some Mac apps do indeed quit when the last open window is closed, but that's not the behaviour of most Mac apps.
thanks fane_j. i appreciate your tollerance for inquiry and williness to be helpful. for all of this discussion about appropriate forums, i still don't have the answer and quite honetly feel a little intimidated about even asking anymore. maybe i was right in the beginning when i said this was silly.
Shootist is right on target. A fundamental difference between Windows and the Mac OS is that in nearly every case — not limited to Powerpoint or other MS apps — you have to Quit a program, not just close its window(s), to make it completely inactive and release whatever RAM it was using.
Oddly enough, some of the few programs that don't adhere to this rule are among Apple's own most popular apps: iPhoto and iTunes, among others. Go figure.
and just for clarification, it is not as Shootist007 suggests. i do understand that the app does not "quit" when you click the red X, but it goes away, and that is in fact what Word and Excel do effectively and become little icons at the bottom of the screen. clicking the red x has no effect on PP. it just stays open until i force quit it. to me that seems odd and makes me wonder if something else is wrong.
Word and Excel don't disappear when you click the red button either. Their names remain in the menu bar, indicating that they are still the active app, until some other application is made the active one — exactly like Powerpoint and nearly all other apps.

This is OT, but, while true for iPhoto, that's not true for iTunes. I use v10.5 on Mac OS X v10.6.8, and closing the last window does not quit the app.
Go figure.
That's simple. Just another instance of Apple breaking their own rules and guidelines. Mere mortals are supposed to do what the Pope says, not what the Pope does.
