silly. all my other applications close just fine when i click on the red dot. not Power Point. i have to force close. just annoying thats all. is this a sign something else is wrong? not so tech savvy.

no kidding. i am having the worst time making myself clear. i know they don't quit entirely, and as i said before, the icons live at the bottom of the screen, menu bar, whatever... what i am saying is that PowerPoint won't even do that. won't close, won't make itself into a tiny ever so bright orange "P" like its supposed to. i am fully aware those icons are technically open.

Bingo! believe it or not i am a well educated person, but this jargon has me over a barrell - yes I do mean to say the "window" does not close. thank you Shootist007 for schooling me on how to say this.

Ok. So are you actively doing something in the Powerpoint program? In otherwords "Could" the program be busy doing something when you are trying to close the "Window"?
Is this true of every Powerpoint window you open, or just a particular one or ones? If you open an existing, already-saved PP file and then immediately click its red button, what happens?

actually, i am not even using Powerpoint. it just opens when i turn on the computer along with everything else i fail to quit before i shut down. thats another annoying feature... but i digress... so its just the opening PP screen.
If you aren't using PP, just forget the red button and Quit it. It makes no sense to leave it running in the background when you have no use for it.
ok. just tried to recreate this error. when i attempt to close the powerpoint window another window pops up, it is a "new presentation" that I have not summoned. THAT is the window that won't close and it only happens after I have restarted my computer. after i force quit the new presentation window, the problem won't reoccur unless i shut down the computer again.
There is an Options check box to not bring up that windows when PP starts. Have you checked that option checkmark.
"Force Quit" has a very specific meaning, which you may or may not intend here. There is a Force Quit... command in the Apple menu, which is used when the Quit command in an application's own menu fails to work. Is that what you're talking about, or are you using "force quit" to mean using the command in the application menu? The latter is not a forced quit, but the normal method of quitting any application (Command+Q is the keyboard shortcut for it, as Shootist has already noted).
You can prevent PP (and any other apps that are plaguing you at startup) from reopening every time you start up your machine, but not being a Lion user myself, I can't remember exactly how to tell you to turn that miserable "feature" off. Someone else will.
Whenever PP opens, it presents that centered window showing the assorted templates you might choose to use in preparing a new presentation. One of them is preselected, and if you close that window, PP opens the selected template, expecting you to go to work on it. If the next thing you do is to click on the red "Close" button in that second window, the second window should also close, without delay or protest. That isn't happening?

Exactly, every step you detail as stated until it comes to closing the window. It does protest. I then must go into the applications menu to "quit" I understand now this is not "force quit"
The only suggestion I have for this problem is either a complete uninstall of all MS Office 2011 Apps and then a reinstall "OR" just reinstalling over the top of the current install.
If you chose to do the over the top install be very careful as if you don't use the Customize option you will end up with 2 sets of Icons in the Dock and some other Programs and or Options will be installed that you didn't install the first time.
To complete Uninstall you MUST follow the instructions on the MS site.
I had the same problem with my macbook pro. What I did is to move the cursor to the PowerPoint icon (the big red P), then click and hold the bottom of the Trackpad on the icon. There will be a menu popping up. Select "Quit" option to close it. I tried a few times and worked for me every time. I think it's a PowerPoint bug.
