8GB DIMMS working in 2008 mac pro 3,1??? making max ram 64GB?

So I was considering upgrading my RAM and found this interesting offer:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/32GB-4X8GB-DDR2-800MHz-FB-DIMM-Apple-Mac-Pro-8-Core-/190 562056192?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2c5e623800

If these 8GB DIMMs actually work that would make the machine's maximum 64GB??

Been googling for an hour and unable to find any confirmed reports of this but it should work in 64-bit, no?

Personally I would trust OWC to sell all the possible acceptable ram combinations for any particular model. And since I don't see OWC selling 8GB ram for 2008 mac pro's I'm inclined to believe it won't work in 2008 mac pro's. OWC is selling only 1's, 2's, and 4's for that model.

FWIW you can always call OWC and see what their opinion is of trying to use 8GB dimms in a 2008.

Good evening, Rejon,

Actually, these were working pulls from decomissioned servers in one of the NOC's that I manage. The servers were ultimately getting thrown out, therefore, I "rescued" this RAM just in time. With that said, I beleive the RAM linked here is what you are looking for. As hatter mentioned, they are still very expensive. He is also right in stating that it is probably cheaper to swap it for a 2010 model. I beleive you could even get a new Mac Pro just for the cost you would incurr from buying 64GB of this RAM. I could be wrong, as some surplus store may sell it for cheaper, but you get the point I'm sure.

Provantage and Amazon have them for less than $700 a pair, however, even at $2,500, you would probably need your head examined for not just buying a new machine.

I would like to update this thread as it is why I bought some 8GB FB-DIMMs in hopes they would work in either a 1,1 or a 3,1 MP.

I got 2 separate 16GB kits. I have been unable to get either of them to work.

It would be great to figure out what exact memory will work, if for no other reason than that future enthusiasts won't waste time & money trying things that don't work.

One kit I got is labeled "Hynix 8GB 2Rx4 PC2-5300F-555-11 HYMP31GF7AFR4C-Y5 D5 1209"

The other set is labeled "HYS72T1G842EFA-3S-C2 8GB 4RX4 PC2-5300F-555-11-Y0 D0 ZSL84303051"

I bought these kits based on this thread so I am bummed out that neither one works.

I have tried with existing sticks in other riser, with just these alone in a single riser, with just these together on same riser. No matter what, the red lights illuminate on the riser indicating problem with these sticks and they are 100% invisible in System Profiler. I have tried them in the 3,1 and in the 1,1. They completely, 100% DO NOT WORK.

It is possible that one or the other set is bad, but I doubt both are. They were purchased on Ebay from separate vendors. They did not claim Mac Pro function, but the specs seem to match.

So if FaceTimeLover is still running his, I would be curious the exact info from the sticks and if he had to do any other tricks to make them work.

It is quite possible that there is a certain exact model number that works. If so, it would be great to figure out what it is.

Good day, DPArt,

Truly sorry to hear about your misfortune. As stated in my last post, the RAM I currently have in my rig can be found here. It has been running since that last post, minus the eight days I was without power during the Hurricane Sandy disaster. There is always the possibility that the RAM you utilized was constructed in a different fashion, where different pairs of chips were used, causing the issue you describe.

I just opened my Mac Pro and took pictures of my RAM to give you an even better physical picture. The only difference I see is that mine are PC2-5300F-555-12's while yours are PC2-5300F-555-11's. I am not well-versed enough in this area to know exactly what the difference between the 12's and the 11's are. Maybe someone else could shed some light on the differences between these two configurations. See below for these images:

As you can see from these images, the link I had previously provided matches up (CT102472AF667).

Again, sorry to hear about your misfortune. At least we now know that this box is quite picky with which RAM you decide to load in her beyond the advertised 32GB.

I hope this has been helpful.

Best regards,

Hi,

Yes raising the dead in relation to this thread...but maybe you can help me??

please 🙂

if not i'll just buy new but wondered if you had any of your old RAM , 4GB sticks you would sell on to me? ?

I've got some of the Flat blue heatsink ram , like you , but in 4GB,

yesterday, one of a pair of the original 2GB sticks died. so before I buy new, ???

Long shot, but worth a try, it would help me out and give you a few $ for some RAM that maybe sat in a drawer.

Same as you Mac Pro 3.1

Thanks Neil

Confirmed by OWC nowadays - the MacPro3,1 configuration will happily accept 64GB of RAM using 8GB memory modules. OWC wants around $450 for those.

Furthermore, you can pick up server memory off eBay, with the same specs (or the slightly slower 667MHz memory) for around $120 for the same 64GB and they work just fine, provided the RAM is "8GB MICRON PC2 5300F 2RX4 FBDIMM" (compatible with the Powered 2950, for example).
