iPad 2 smart cover damaging iPad housing

I contacted Apple (Netherlands) this week to address the problem of damage on my iPad 2, caused by the (original) smart cover:

There appears to be two dots of some sort, under the magnet strip, which scratch and damage the housing of my iPad considerably. I talked to the Apple Care support desk and mailed them some detailed photo's of the damage, but their verdict was very disappointing. They told me that they conclude (from the pictures) that the damage is caused by dirt and dust in between the magnet strip and the iPad, thereby scratching the aluminum. This isn't covered by the warranty, so tough break. They also advised me to be more careful with my iPad and to always protect it from dust and so on.

Ridiculous and simply not true. Since I've bought the iPad, the smart cover has been attached and I've always carried it around in a Eastpak iWay iPad sleeve (smart cover attached inside as well). It is clear to see that the two dots are not simply dust or dirt. Something is piercing through the strip and scratching the **** out of my iPad. Apple apparently does not cover damage caused my original Apple accessories. Just like the scratch marks on the side of my iPhone 4, caused my the original Apple bumper case, this cover also damages my Apple device.

Very frustrating. Does anybody have a similar experience and maybe some advice? I'm going to the Apple store this afternoon, hoping for a different verdict. Are there any other ways to prove my point?

YA I have that same problem I found the solution to the problem which is kinda odd. You might think this is stupid but what really helps is paper raped around the whole strip. It isn't touching it directly do its fine.

Same has happened to mine as well.

I have the original light blue cover and its been on my iPad since I bought it, mere two months ago..
Temporarily fix here with duck tape xD
I didnt really notice it before I took the cover off a week or two ago, and I know it didnt come from dust or dirt as I've been fairly careful with my iPad.

Kinda annoying that it should get such a damage on the exterior from something that is meant to protect it. (granted the screen more so than the exterior but whatever.. xD)
Think I'll be getting a full body cover tho.. dont trust those magnets anymore.

Good news. It took few days, but Apple gave me new iPad 2 and also new Smart Cover. So if you have the same problem, go to the Apple store and ask for new one 😉

I didnt buy mine in the Apple store but a different store that sells Apple products (competely legit and everything here in Norway).

You think they'd do the same?
I do have a 2 year 'idiot-warranty', but in that case I'd have to pay 400 kr (equivalent to about 70 dollars) to get it replaced, even tho its... technically not my fault that its exterior is damaged.

Same here (in the Netherlands). Mine came from a reseller as well, and they wouldn't take the risk. The first official Apple Store just opened in Amsterdam, so I'm going to pay them a visit.

I didn't buy mine ether in Apple Store. In Czech Republic, there is no official Apple Store. I bougt it in some Premium Reseller where they also gave me the new one. So give it a try.

Hmm.. we have a store called Humac and one called Eplehuset(pretty much Apple house).. wonder if they're sort of the same deal as Apple stores..
Otherwise I'm fairly screwed on that part xD

That's way worse than my scratches!

I finally went to the Apple Store (Amsterdam), where I showed the iPad and Smart Cover. After some persuasion, they decided to 'swop' both items for new ones.

Your best chance is by dealing with Apple directly, not via a reseller. Show them this thread, it helped in my case.

i was in the apple store in zurich and they gave me a "new" one without any discussion, ipad and smartcover.

but it ***** anyway. and my signature is gone.

FYI: if someone reads this and goes for a swap: take the receipt from the smart cover with you, they dont have it in their system
