Safari will not open to Home Page

Safari will not open to my selected home page when initially starting or restarting after quitting. It defaults to a different webpage. Preferences are set correctly to the home page. I have tried unchecking the restore windows box in the general system preferences. I have found and trashed the com.apple.safari plist file and am still having the problem. It appears that Safari is not recognizing the home page selected (Xfinity) or is being over ridden by the other webpage. Thoughts??

I have not used terminal before but I entered the command exactly as you had written it. I selected new command and entered the text and selected run and received a message process completed. I also ran it inside a shell. No luck with either attempt. Did I use terminal correctly? Thanks

If you are using Mac OS X Lion

Go to System Pref > General and check that "Restore windows when quitting and re-opening apps" is not selected.

Safari will then open with what you have chosen in Safari Prefs.

But, if you log out with Safari windows still open, the next time you launch Safari, it will reopen those windows. To prevent this, you have to quit Safari (or close all Safari windows) before logging out.

Unchecked Restore Windows, quit Safari and restarted computer. Safari boots up at start up and defaulted to the Garmin page. Rechecked System pref and Restore was checked.

Have you tried closing Safari first (and anything else that's running), THEN uncheck restore windows, close system prefs, restart...

And wasn't one of the updates a few months ago one that kept it from leaving restore windows checked as the default? Have you done all the updates?

No luck still defaults to the Garmin webpage and general preferences returns with restore windows box checked.

OK, it seems that you have a bug in general prefs.

With restore windows always on you can prevent apps like Safari, Preview, Pages... To reopen windows by pressing the option key (alt) while selecting the App > Quit menu or with the shortcut options (alt) + cmd + Q.

What is interesting is that when restore windows is on, you prevent reopening with that option key stuff; and when restore is off you will get windows reopening. Well, I'm not sure I'm clear... You get the opposite of what is set in gen prefs.

You can check this in Safari by selecting the Safari menu and pressing then releasing alt.

This may not solve your Garmin page problem in Safari, but it may help with other apps reopening windows.

go to system preferences, not safari preferences. In the general tab check the box that says close windows when exiting an application. That's it! It works.

Thanks for all the suggestions, unfortunately none of them solved my issue. After a session with Apple it turned out to be a corruption issue with several files which ultimately resolved the problem. I don't remember all of the twists and turns I took with the tech support person so can't give a detailed explanation of how it was fixed.
