Can't wake Lion over wifi (or ethernet) using iPad and home sharing.

I've upgraded to Lion and everything's fine apart from one problem: using my iPad to access home shared iTunes content on my mac no longer works when my mac is asleep.

That's a change in behaviour from Snow Leopard; I used to be able to sleep my mac and then wake it over wifi using either my iPad or iPhone to access all of my home shared libraries. The mac screen used to light up for ten seconds and then go dark again, but it served me the files.

Lion seems to go into a deeper sleep which it can't be woken from. If I attempt to wake my mac from my iPad within about ten minutes of putting my mac to sleep then home sharing seems to work and lets me use the home share libraries, but if I leave it any longer than that then the mac seems to fall into a coma and can't be woken. The weird thing is that I still see a "shared library" folder on my iPad, but when I click on it nothing happens. I think my Time Capsule is listening for wifi access and issuing the magic packet to the mac, but the mac just ain't listening.

I'm using a Time Capsule in bridge mode from an ADSL modem and I've accepted a TC firmware update last week and I'm on lion 10.7.3. I've tried using Ethernet to connect the mac to the TC (and temporarily disabled the wifi connection) but that still doesn't work. Also, note I'm NOT suffering from the problem that 10.7.3 seems to be giving a few other people - my mac reconnects to my wifi just fine when I wake it up manually. For the record, This was an upgrade, so there's still a tick in "wake on network" in power settings and home sharing on iTunes is still configured the same as it was before.

Does anyone have any suggestions about how I can get home sharing to work when my Lion mac is asleep please?

Reverting for me will cause more troubles than living with Lion and just waking my Mac manually. I have recently come up with a solution that works for me. I just set my mac to sleep after 3 hours. Set my screen to sleep after 3mins of inactivity and make sure my Hard Disk sleeps whenever possible. Then set the schedule to turn on before I come in in the evening and turn off at midnight. Seems to do the trick. Not ideal, as I'd like it to work as advertised but as I said, reverting to Snow Leopard just for this feature for me isn't a solution.

We should see 10.7.4 very soon which has screen sharing as one of the main issues being fix, let's hope that as waking up the mac with screen sharing is the main reason for using screen sharing, as you won't be able to use it without doing that, they have fixed this issue. Other than that, I wouldn't hold out for any further changes until Mountain Lion.

If anyone knows how to change the solved status then I'll gladly change it. Further update for you, after reverting to Snow Leopard I asked Apple for a refund on the grounds that Lion wasn't behaving as advertised.

They refunded my £20.99 without quibble - go to iTunes purchases history and use the 'report a problem' link.

You'll need to already have a time machine backup to restore back to SL.

Well I don't think I'll downgrade, but rather wait for Apple to improve these issues with Lion. I have the same feeling I got with Leopard, which I had to troubleshoot a lot till its last revisions.

Then Snow Leopard came out being much more stable and needing less troubleshooting. The matter is that while Leopard was released during the switch from PPC to Intel architecture, therefore some issues were natural, Lion doesn't mark any big jump ahead in hardware architecture improvements/changes.

I'm starting to feel as many other OS X users, who think that Apple is putting more efforts on developing and improving iOS rather than OS X, which would be a shame cause this brand didn't put ROI on top of everything, and that's what made it so successful in these past years.

I have an imac with Lion 10.7.3 and a linksys (cisco) router. I wanted to access it when it was sleeping, but couldn't by wifi, even though the wake on lan option was set.

After reading a bit about the problem and the various fixes, I was searching in the /Library/Preferences/SystemConfiguration folder and I saw the com.apple.PowerManagement.plist file. I opened it in an editor, and then noticed a line that had a key of PrioritizeNetworkReachabilityOverSleep.

The value was 0, so I changed it to 1 and saved the file.

Now I have no trouble accessing the Mac by my iphone, even after it sits overnight. You may want to try it.

This solved the issue for me!!!! You sir, are awesome. Now I can't start putting my computer back to sleep instead of just putting the display to sleep. Before making this ONE, SIMPLE CHANGE, I could not use the VNC app to wake my iMac wake from my iPad. Now it works!!!! Very, very, cool! Can you tell how pleased I am at this fix? LOL.

Also, I am pretty newbie when it comes to this stuff, so for any other newbies out there, remember to change the permissions for the folder in which the plist file resides with Right Click, Get Info. In essence, this is the most difficult part of the fix, which is obviously not.

One more question for you, good sir. Did you ever have the problem in Lion where you lose wifi connection completely? This happens when I have N connections on the router and using WPA2 encryption. It is only computer on the network that does this and I have Multiple computers on the network including iPhones and iPads. I have tried a trillion support solutions and still no joy.

I recant my previous solution find, after a few hours the problem came back... So last night I decided to do a fresh reinstall of OSX Lion and get my files back from Time Machine. After doing all the updates, including the wifi fixes and such, I have not dropped my connection. I hope this is a final fix, since I pretty much did the most drastic thing save for taking it in for a replacement.

If the issue returns over the next few days I will definitely be back here to post and rage. If I don't return, then all is good and I am enjoying a beer for finally being done with this headache. I guess the lesson here is when all else fails, START OVER...

Well I upgraded to 10.7.4 last night and it has fixed the problem (so far). I will be testing it over the next couple of days but as it stands, when accessing my iTunes via the ios remote. I now have the iTunes icon apear and once selected it wakes my mac to access the files (without waking the sceen) from there I can access my mac and wake it fully with a vnc app. I haven't tried waking it directly with the vnc app but I can't see why this wouldn't work. I also need to test it with my AppleTV's to see if they wake my mac on demand.

Needless to say we (including myelf) have had solutions that worked for us only to go and break again so as I said, this is working now (i put my mac to sleep last night and was able to wake this morning). Fingers crossed!

IIIMOODIII, thanks for the update. I reverted back to Snow but I'd like to able to use Lion because of iCloud. I really hope it stays fixed for you (us). But I know that many people have thought they have fixed this bug only to then report back 48 hours later to say that the problem had returned.

Could you post back after a few more days if it's still working please? If you say yes then I think it may finally be safe to upgrade my 11,3 iMac (Atheros wifi chip) to Lion. Just in time for Mountain Lion, probably :-)

Thanks

Jon.

At the time of writing this post it had worked for me perfectly. Sorry if you missunderstood my context as I was referring to my own problem and wasn't generally implying it will work for everyones setup. I also did state that this was something that I was hoping would carry on working and not a proven solution hence the "fingers crossed". Sorry to get your hopes up.

However, after leaving my mac asleep for longer than 8 hours it no longer wakes. I will just go back to scheduling wake and sleep as this was working fine for me as a perfectly good work around to the problem.

Has anyone tried this who is using an Apple Airbase Extreme and got it to work, or is this just working with thrid party routers?

I'm sure this is something I have tried way back near the begining of this post but it didn't work for me. Perhaps it's something to do with apple routers rather than a Lion problem?

I will give it another go now I'm on 10.7.4, might make the dfference, might not?

I changed the value and now when I access it from VNC it accepts password and my mac WAKES UP but it just sits. The second time I try to connect it gets stuck in Connecting (RealVNC) or Negotiate Protocol Version (UltraVNC). I installed TeamViewer and I got a black screen, when I typed with the mac's keyboard I got to the login. I do have a password after computer wakes up or screen saver that could be causing this. I removed the password and was able to connect with TeamViewer but not VNC.

So... I seem to have 2 issues:

1. Screen sharing & VNC do not work after a sleep.

2. Keyboard interaction does not work using TeamViewer.

The point is that changing the value does wake up the mac, but you can't use it afterwards... If you don't type after it wakes up it does not respond. And Screen Sharing doesn't work regardless.

I have AirPort Extreme (one of the main reasons I bought it is wake-up on WIFI feature). I changed the key value of PrioritizeNetworkReachabilityOverSleep from 0 to 1 yesterday and did tests of waking up iTunes shared library from my iPad. The first attempt is always rotating and sitting. I had to try a few more times before the library showed up on my iPad. These were done yesterday. However, the test of this morning (after deep sleeps) failed. Both iMac and iPad are on AirPort Extreme 5GHz WIFI.

Here is the next thing I tried:

1. Wake up the mac with VNC

2. Access it via TeamViewer

Result: Black screen

Apparently after a wake the screen is asleep and TeamViewer does not work with screen asleep. After the screen wakes up I can use my mac with TeamViewer but not with VNC. And I tried disabling screen sleep in the energy saving section but that was a no-go.

Bummer. I can't put the mac OR the screen to sleep or I can't access it again.

Can't wake Lion over wifi (or ethernet) using iPad and home sharing.
