Yes
If so how?
To provide the steps, we first need to know what operating system your Mac (or PC) is running, and whether or not you have AirPort Utility installed on the computer.
Mac book pro's, iPads and iPhones. Mac OS 10.6.8. W Airport utility installed. I have 3year old Airport extreme which I could not previously configure to act as a wap w previous Netgear home router and modem. Have just taken delivery of new Netgear N600. The router needs to be positioned where the adsl line comes into the building which is too far from the rooms where I need wireless connectivity. There is cat 6 cable between router location and the rooms where wifi needed. Connected to this cat 6 network are various servers which I need all on one single network which the wifi devices can join. so I need to configure a wireless access point (n) that will not issue ip addresses and will simply give access to the Netgear router.
Please perform a Factory Default Reset on the AirPort Extreme (AEBS) so that any old settings will be cleared out and we start from a known point.
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
Once this has been accomplished, connect the Ethernet cable from your main router to the WAN port (circle of dots icon) on the AEBS
Then, with a Mac laptop near the AEBS, connect a spare Ethernet cable from the Mac to one of the LAN <-> ports on the AEBS
Open AirPort Utility, select the AEBS, and click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station menu below the row of icons to assign a device name, device password and adjust Time Zone settings
Click the Wireless tab next to the Base Station tab and adjust the wireless settings as needed
Click the Internet icon, then click the Internet Connection tab
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
(Bridge Mode turns off both DHCP and NAT on the AEBS so it will receive these settings from the Netgear router....allowing the AEBS to operate as a true wireless access point)
Click Update to save the settings
Disconnect the Ethernet cable from the Mac and close AirPort Utility as soon as you see the message that the settings have been stored on the AEBS. The AEBS will display a green light in 25-30 seconds.
It is very important that both the Netgear and AEBS be powered off. Then start the Netgear first and allow it to run a few minutes. Then power up the AEBS.
Check the network for proper operation.
Thank you for the great information! My Apple Airport Extreme is no longer intermittently dropping the internet connection!!!
