How do I speed up my iMac

Our iMac is running incredibly slow. We have lots of digital pictures on the computer and the hard drive is close to being full. Is there a way to run some utilities to clean up the drive. If I use iTunes connect, can I delete the songs off my hard drive?

If the disk is close to being full that can cause the Mac to run slowly.

I tested all of the supposed cleanup applications I could download a copy. None of them did what was claimed. Many did things that I didn't ask them to do. A number of which were actually dangerous. After my testing I deleted all of them from my system. I now recommend that you don't not use any of them.

Instead I recommend OmniDiskSweeper to find out which files and folders are using yopur disk space and then manually delete or moving as much as you can.

What typically takes up the most amount of HD space is media such as Music, photographs and movies. Please get an external HD and follow Apple's instructions below for moving those libraries to the EHD. This should free up a lot of space and should help the overall performance too.
