my mom upgraded to the new imac g5 from her quicksilver on my recommendation. She hates it. Any reason why this fresh out-of-the box G5 would run so much slower even after all the apple advertisements and reported benchmarks? Could it have something to do with her old computer settings or Rosetta? Help please before she disowns me.
It sounds like she bought the Intel iMac! I just bought the G5 iSight iMac
2 weeks ago and I love it!!! It's just as fast or faster than the Intel iMac
despite what many people in here tend to believe. But this is just my
experience. To me, the Intel iMac runs about as fast as my Mac Mini.
Check your specs again! Find out which one you have then you
can see which iMac it is your mother really dislikes! If it's an Intel Duo iMac,
it's running on Rosetta! She would probably want to swap it out for the
fast and stable G5 iMac.
If I have guessed it right, you will probably have the default 512 MB ram configuration. I suggest you add another 1 GB of Ram and she will have a real different experience.
My 20" Intel Core Duo with 2 GB of RAM is sitting right next to my PowerMac dual 2.7 and their performace is nearly identical. Rosetta slows initial loading down a little but nothing to get too concerned about. Intel processors are the future for Macs and these intial problems will soon be a thing of the past. The secret to the new iMac Intel Core Duo is to load it with RAM.
I have the new iMac G5 Intel Core Duo with 1GB of Ram. I have been disappointed with the speed of my apps, such as Photoshop, iview media pro and iphoto too. Would you think that adding another gig of ram would improve performance? I have the iMac G5 ICD with a 20" cinema display attached and was wondering if the second monitor was the reason for slower than expected performance.
