IMAC wireless keeps stopping or disconnecting (every 30 mins)

I've just bought an Imac 21.5inch, mid 2011 - Lion 10.7.3 (11D50) and the wireless connection keeps stopping either it shows it's connected or it's not connected at all. This happens every 30 mins or so, sometimes after 5 minutes or sometimes I can get away for a few hours. I'm using a Draytek router with 3 Wifi aeriels and in the house I have 2 mac minis, an ipad, iphone, android phone and a couple of other PCs, none of which have this problem. I've tried changing the router from G to N and also checked who else nearby is in the same wifi settings, I'm set to 6 others set to 1 or 12. So wouldn't think there is interference. I've only just bought this machine so wondering if it's a problem with Lion or the iMAC.

Any help or pointers, ideas would be great please.

Thanks

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.3), 21.5 inch Mid 2011

I'm sorry that the fix didn't work for you. It is still working for me several days later. I downloaded the apple wifi update and it didn't fix the sleep wake wifi drop, but i don't care at this point. At least I found a fix that stopped the wifi from dropping every 5 minutes. I wonder why it works for me and not you guys? Are you updated to 10.7.3? It might also have to do with the fact that the fix supposedly only works if you have "Atheros wifi hardware".

Presuming you're running 10.7.3 and have done the wifi update - try changing your energy settings - and turning off the function that puts your hard drive to sleep when possible... also - go to your network settings and renew your DHCP lease... (settings, network, advanced, tcp/ip). See if this helps - if not - download Apple's wifi update again.... you could also do an SMC reset .... I did all of these and have thus had 2-3 days so far of total relief.

I gave up, I reconnected the good old Ethernet cable to my brand new iMac 27" with 10.7.3, and now I'm trying to forget what a defeat this is. This is supposed to work wirelessly, but it does NOT. A few days ago I paid a visit to the Genius Bar at the new Apple Store here in Amsterdam. The very friendly guys there had not heard of the problem and started the all too known mantra of resetting Pram, renewing DHCPLease, choosing a different channel, etc, all the things we already tried thousands of times. And none of them showed any understanding when I tried to point out to them that the only possible remaining culprit is the built-in Airport card in combination with the 4.0 Atheros driver. This used to work, it does not anymore. Please fix it, Apple!

I also gave up, but I am still frustrated about it. I run a business were I have to upload large folder many times. Severall times somewere in the upload the connection drops and I have to start all over again. Were in the old days you could do something besides you're iMac, now you have to check severall times if it went well. I cant connect trough cable so it's a big problem. I dont understand it eighter, sometimes he just looses the connection and sometimes he connects to an 169.xxx adress. And while my Imac runs all day, there is no fixed time or interval were the connection gets lost. Sometimes it goes well for severall days and other times its 1 to 6 times a day! I tought computers weren't whimsical? And still my old iMac (20", half 2007) never has a problem. I'm even considering buying an Apple Airport Xtreme! If that doesn't work I'm switching to HP!!! 😠 😁

By the way, does everybody with this problem have the same wifi card?

It's always the Atheros Firmwareversion 4.0. Earlier versions don't seem to have this problem. There is even a way to downgrade this firmware, somebody posted this solution a while ago, but I don't feel comfortable interfering with the kernel, so I stay away from solutions like this. I think Apple has to give us the final solution, but they keep remarkably silent on this issue.

My 27" iMac 2011 is still connected through a cable, because it drops the connection at irregular intervals when I try the wireless thing. My iPod touch, however, works fine wirelessly, as does my son's MacBook Pro and his iPhone, and any laptopcomputer with any version of Windows. Now please Apple, do something about it! This is unbearable.

I have noticed, and this seems so basic, but Ive changed my energy saver so that the computer is set to NEVER sleep and my display is set to sleep after 1hr.

Ever since doing this, my continuing issue with the wifi dropping out on my iMac only has stopped. I changed this about 6 days ago and Im pretty sure I havent had an issue.

Stay tuned though, will update you if I do!!

The other 4 x apple devices connected to my wifi at home has never had an issue of dropping out, it just seems to be this iMac.
