Why do Voice Memos show up in my Music library?

Is anyone else bothered by the fact that Voice Memos sync from your iOS device into your Music library, instead of into their own section?? Under Media Kind, there is a tag for "Voice Memo" (just as there is a tag for Music/Audiobook/Podcast/Video etc), but even when it is tagged as Voice Memo, it still shows up in Music. Shouldn't ther be a separate section under Library in iTunes for Voice Memos? There is a separate section for Music, Movies, TV Shows, Podcasts, iTunes U, Books, Apps, Tones, and Radio - but not for Voice Memos!!!!! This a function I use all the time and it's annoying that it is not properly categorized. And it's especially annoying - not to mention embarassing! - when I am playing music from my library and a voice memo comes on! Some of those are private thoughts, like journals!!!!! Super awkward when there are people around.

I have resorted to changing the Media Kind to Audiobook so that it at least is grouped with other Spoken Word files, rather than with my Music. Apple, please fix this!!!

I found this post from another user who also agrees with me. Ceres1, if you're out there, any updates on this issue?

This is a bit annoying!

If you examine the file info for the voice memo file within iTunes, it does have Media Kind correctly tagged as "Voice Memo" rather than "Music", but it still shows up under "Music".

I don't mind the files being in iTunes, but they should be treated separately like Video, Podcasts, Ringtones, etc....

Have sent feedback to Apple and suggest everyone else do the same.

Years later and it beggars belief this most simplest of problems for Apple to address and resolve, has been completely and begrudgingly ignored.

Its embarrassing when on occasions just wanting to play your iTunes Library on 'random' everything, just to see what refreshing surprise the music player will throw up! Quite often this is the best way to hear songs you haven't heard for years (even decades) nor would likely ever hear because one never thinks of listening to it again having gone from time-period state of mind consciousness - especially if one has a vast library and there's tens of thousands of songs in many albums.

So 'random play all' throws up surprises, many 'blasts from the past' and on occasions songs never heard of before - but then comes on a very loud voice that's painfully embarrassing and potentially troubling if a personal memo. This is bad.

I am amazed that this thread has had little reponse as it should be on fire. I have searched online for ages for a fix and have not come to one as yet. I too am annoyed that all my voice memos and that of other family members are being synced to itunes and bunched into the music library???. They are classed as voice memos so why mix them with the Music (especially my voice). I have voice memos unchecked in devices music section but they are still being synced. This is plain DUMB and needs to be sorted out.

Come on Apple... This should be easily addressed in next itunes update dont you think.

It's not "fixed" because it is NOT BROKEN. That's the way it's designed to work. If you don't like it, tell Apple. Don't whine about it here.

It is broken as it didn't use to work this way, Voice memos are their own media type and have their own folder under iTunes Media. That tells us it was not intended to work this way.

I regard this as a bug and I suggest we all do a proper bug report at https://www.apple.com/feedback/itunesapp.html

I wrote this under the "Playing music…" subject "

Bug report:

After you sync Voice Memos they are listed in the music library listing. This is not in line with the fact that voice memos are their own media type in iTunes and have their own folder inside "iTuned Media".

Clearly Voice Memos shouldn't be listed as music, because they are not typically music for a majority of users. In the event the user records music as a voice memo they can change the media type."

I find Apple to be responsive these days. We turned them to give us local sync of Calendar and Contacts, so please make your voice heard directly to Apple and share any workarounds you can find.

Yes it is true that there is no Voice Memo section in Library and it is an m4a encoded file like music files. But Apple, if you're reading this, the Voice Memos would be better off under the Audiobook section, as that also contains various other "Spoken Word" files. It would not be that hard for them to just set all Voice Memo's to be classified as Audiobooks rather than Music.

My children have been recording voice memos on their new ipods.

However, when I sync their ipods to itunes the voice memos appear in the music library.

Now, a voice memo is certainly not music so I assumed it must be my fault because their is no way apple would allow this to occur. So, I searched and found this thread.

I'm astounded that apple think this is acceptable. They should be ashamed of themselves. There has been a major itunes refresh since these issues were reported so whats up with that?

Because a voice memo is not 'music'.

Is that not clear to you?

You can use Voice Memo to record your singing, so who cares what you use it for.

I have already explained to you but you think you know better. Voice memos are saved as .m4a no different than music and since iTunes do not read the content it will be stored as music. It that not clear to you?

Anyway, follow KiltedTim tip and tell Apple. Over and Out.

As you have founded out Voice memo tags are not read. So your smart doesn't change a thing. There is no Voice memo section, but you can create a playlist and put all your voice memos and sync to all your devices, problem solved. Why all these whinning? Write Apple since no user can change the workings of iTunes. Is that not clear to you.

I Have just emailed Apple Cutomer Support.

Probably the more the better in order to fix the problem

I too hate having to deselect the 'Voice Memos" every time I want to play my music in the Library.

Hoefully a fix will be released!

This is what i wrote to them:

"When I sync iPhone with iTunes all the Voice Memos I have on my phone are correctly identified and labeled as Voice memos BUT they are placed under the 'Music' folder under 'Library'. THAT is quite annoying, as I would like to be able to just play All of SONGS in my library without hearing Voice Memos during the Playback. Can you guys find a way to make the Voice Memos NOT go in the SAME FOLDER as the actual music when synced?

I noticed that the Playlist "VOICE MEMOS" gets auto-created during the install of iTunes. The Memos I mentioned earlier are of course present in that Playlist (where I would like to keep them) but they are also present in the actual 'Music' folder. Can we remove them for the Music Folder. Thank you and I hope you have a brat day!"

I just talked to Apple Support about this issue. They are aware of the problem and hopefully working to fix it in the next iTunes Release. They gave me a workaround that worked for me: If you right-click on the voice memos and choose Get Info>Options>Media Kind and select "Audiobook" they will stop displaying with your songs and instead move to your Books/Audio books category. Again not the best solution but for now it is better than having my music catalogue mixed up with some random voice memo.

I have no idea how to follow the directions to restore all my voice memos. I saw another post where a subscriber wrote "Apple ought to be ashamed of themselves". It sounds to peculiar to admonish one of the world's greatest computer companies, but that is the best phrase I can come up with, without adding any expletives. Apple, you Nuts! Why not keep you reputation for making everything simple and just allow Voice Mails to download with the rest of the texts and contacts, etc????? I had a cry experienced computer person with a Master's in MIS from Boston U try and download my VM's for me, and they vanished. You people are better than that and why isn't it more easy that just a click of a button to download or restore VM's? Your reputation is totally diminished in my eyes, and many others, after reading any posts about difficulties of downloading or restoring Voice Mails. I am just SICK at the two hours I put into this project and losing all my VM's that should have been downloaded with a click of a button.
