Loss of Save As function in iWork '09

I'm a longtime Mac user (since 1984), and I also used AppleWorks for as long as it was around, switching to iWork when it came out, and most recently I was using iWork '09. But recently I switched to MS Office for one simple reason--loss of the Save As function. This was something I used frequently, and the things I have to do now to do the same thing I used to do so simply with Save as is crazy, and I can't for the life of me understand why Apple ditched such a simple and widely used function.

But here is my question. I would like to voice my displeasure to Apple, specifically the iWork team, for this change, but don't know where to go to do it. Or maybe this is the place...maybe Apple techies monitor this site to pick up tips, complaints...I don't know. Any ideas?

Kappy,

I think you are confusing my replies with those of the original poster.

I never said I was opposed to the new changes; I just wanted to correct your statement that it is only one more step to produce the same result as Save As… because it takes three more steps to get all of the functionality.

Since those four functions are all available in Lion, I think it would have been a better interface decision to keep the menu item that combined them and its keyboard shortcut, but it isn't a problem for me because I haven't moved to Lion. If I do, I will probably write an AppleScript to apply those four menu items and use Automator to wrap it as a Service to which I can apply a custom keyboard shortcut, so I won't have to give up Pages.

And even though I am still on Snow Leopard, if the computer crashes, I won't lose the whole file, because I know how to save periodically.

I'm baffled. I followed all the commentary and still don't know/understand how to Save or Save As in Pages '09.

Has Apple provided any instructions. I've been away from Pages since I installed Lion, but now that I'm trying to use it, I'm flumoxed by many of the changes. Again, where are we supposed to learn how to use this new animal?

You're going through what I went through. It is confusing, even after you read the detailed instructions about how to get a Save As, or the same thing as a Save AS, in OS Lion. I've been using Macs since 1984, and I still found this new feature baffling AFTER I'd read several posts on how to use it and how it was not really complicated at all, etc., etc.

Yes it is annoying.

No Apple won't admit that, nor do anything about it.

So we must now:

Menu > File > Duplicate > Save duplicate with new name > close both duplicate and original files

Apple makes it worse by NOT having a keyboard short cut for Duplicate nor for Don't Save.

Peter

Peter,

The keyboard shortcut for Don't Save is: Command-Delete.

Thank-you Jeff. Kappy is wrong (and also not very helpful or encouraging when people are trying to sort these things out). It is NOT one more step when you want to change the name of the file and the location to save it. With "save as," you could do that in one step.

It's fine having "Save version," but "Save as" could have been retained as well (even if it was 'buried' somewhere as someone else suggested).
