I'm a longtime Mac user (since 1984), and I also used AppleWorks for as long as it was around, switching to iWork when it came out, and most recently I was using iWork '09. But recently I switched to MS Office for one simple reason--loss of the Save As function. This was something I used frequently, and the things I have to do now to do the same thing I used to do so simply with Save as is crazy, and I can't for the life of me understand why Apple ditched such a simple and widely used function.

 

But here is my question. I would like to voice my displeasure to Apple, specifically the iWork team, for this change, but don't know where to go to do it. Or maybe this is the place...maybe Apple techies monitor this site to pick up tips, complaints...I don't know. Any ideas?

    This has nothing to do with iWork. It's a change in OS X. Specifically part of Lion's AutoSave and Versions. Doing the equivalent of Save As takes one extra step. Of course if you don't need to change a file's name or its location, then filesaving is completely automatic. So nothing was "ditched."

    The changes in Lion were brought about because it's what users have requested. If you don't like it you can express an opinion at Apple Feedback.

    Yes, sorry. I mis-spoke. I know it's a function of Lion. But it still directly affects the way iWork works. Thanks for the directions to apple feedback.

    While I think this is more a matter of learning a new workflow than a major lapse, and leaving out that Export is now only available as that, and not Save As…, I do not understand your counting.

     

    To Save As… you must

    1. Duplicate
    2. Revert the original to last save
    3. Close the original
    4. Save the duplicate

    Select Duplicate

    Select Save

     

    Done. One extra step - the first one. There is no need to revert anything.

    If you have made changes before duplicating, Autosave will incorporate them into the original file, whereas Save As… would not. And the original is still open. Sometimes one or the other of those things may be what you want,in which case the new system may be more convenient. But, to get the behavior expected from Save As…, you have to do all four.

    And, if the machine crashes without autosave you have lost the whole file. I can't help you out since you are obviously opposed to the new process and do not wish to adapt. So you are free to return to Snow Leopard where Save As will be present.

    Yes...you can (1) adapt, or (2) go back to Snow Leopard, or (3) switch to MS Office, as I did. But as a longtime user of AppleWorks, and then iWork, the switch was painful...although now I'm used to Office and everything is OK. The purpose of this post was to find out where to go to voice my original displeasure at the loss of the function to Apple.

     

    (I don't understand why Apple could not have buried the Save As function in some obscure right-click menu, or made the function available in a Preferences option...something like that.)

    Don't get too used to things. The next big update for Office will most likely incorporate the new autosave and versions. "Save As is dead. Long live Save As."

    How ironic since you can do a Save As by selecting Duplicate and then selecting Save from the File menu. Voila! It's not buried nor obscure.

    It's easier just to switch (and really the new function is not as simple as you make it sound, not for me and a lot of others; it's cumbersome and confusing). When Office gets rid of Save As, if they ever do...well, that's when I will adapt. But I likely will never use iWork again, and I feel bad about that.

    Apparently not bad enough to adapt to Lion's new ways nor bad enough to downgrade to Snow Leopard. Why bang your head against the wall? Or does it just feel that good when you stop?

     

    The new method is that simple, but you and others would rather fight than switch. It's no more or less cumbersome than learning how to use new software. Only in this case the learning curve isn't very steep or long.

     

    Sory, but I just don't get the mind-set. I'm 70 years old but I can adapt to change when it's called for or necessary. You just "move on."

    You only move on if you have to, and I didn't because MS Office still incorpoarates Save As. Office is considerably more powerful and feature-rich than iWork, so there are other benefits to swtiching...although I had hoped to see iWork progress and become and equal competitor to Office. There needs to be another office suite besides MS Office, especially sine WordPerfect abandoned the Mac market.

    I agree about Office versus iWork. But there are three free competitors to Office that work on the Mac:

     

    Libre Office

    NeoOffice

    Open Office

     

    All three are essentially feature compatible with Office 2007 for Windows and include everything but Outlook and Entourage. Word processor, spreadsheet, and presentation plus drawing and database components.

    Interesting...I'm only ever heard of Open Office. I'll look at the other two. Thanks for the info.
