installd took 130% of CPU and sent temperatures through the roof. Why?

Me too. I have a 17" MacBook Pro Unibody with 8 gig.

More details would be helpful such as the Model MBP, the OS, the temperatures attained and the applications that were running.

I know that with some command line tool you can read the temperature. But I'm too lazy to google 😉. Maybe you name it. The next time my fan is blowing, I`ll try to supply the information.

iStat pro is an excellent temperature/fan speed monitor tool.

Easily the best temp/fan control is: SMC fan control. You can easily change your default fan speed and make multiple profiles to quickly turn fan up/down. it displays in the menu bar and uses a max of 0.3% CPU. Since OS X 10.5 it's treated me well. Github, opensource...can't beat it.

Also, installd tried melting my CPU today. I noticed it (thanks SMC ) and killed it like a skillet. 130% hoggin and 156F. But I"m running my fan at double the default RPM & have my mid-2009 MBP seated upon a laptop cool with another fan in it!

It seems like I've been down this road with installd and too tired to chase it down. Wish I'd stayed on 10.6.8
