Can I use a HDMI splitter to connect apple tv to my TV and surround sound system?

I recently bought apple TV and was wanting to connect it to my Philips surround sound system (doesnt have an optical audio port). So can I use a HDMI splitter to connect apple tv to my tv and surround sound? If so will there be any loss of quality by using the HDMI splitter? can anyone recommend one?

3 Port HDMI Pigtail Switch with 55 cm HDMI Cable

I am using one of these and it works fine AND it gives you an extra HDMI input as well. On Amazon the splitter is about $11 plus shipping. My setup is from my ATV2 to this splitter with the single dongle end to one of my TV (Samsung) HDMI ports. I use one of the other open HDMI ports on this dongle for my MBA. It saves me pulling out and switching HDMI cables when I want to plug in my MBA.

Whether there will be any problem with it with a home theater stereo system I haven't a clue. I'm happy with the sound I get straight to the TV via the HDMI cable. I've read elsewhere that some people have trouble with ATV2 if they run the HDMI through their home theater system.
