iDVD on Lion OS X - Custom Install iLife '09

Since iDVD is no longer offered by Apple as part of the "iLife package" that comes with new Macs running Lion OS X (10.7.x) I was searching for info about custom installing iDVD from an iLife '09 package . I stumbled across a few threads (including this one) but none that I found clearly outlined how to do it so I thought I'd add this post for folks that follow

The iLife '09 package contains iPhoto, iMovie, iDVD, iWeb and Garageband. If you want iDVD you'll need to buy a copy of iLife '09 or a Mac Box Set which includes OS X 10.6, iWork '09 and iLife '09 to get it.

I wanted to install iDVD '09 while avoiding conflicts with iMovie '11, iPhoto '11 and Garageband '11 (and I didn't have use for iWeb '09 since it's no longer supported).

To custom install iDVD '09 from an iLife '09 package disc...

- Be sure that iPhoto '11, iMovie '11 and Garageband '11 are already installed (available from the Mac App Store if needed).

- Insert the iLife '09 disc, click "Continue" and for each item in the left-hand menu including "Introduction", "Read Me", "License" and Destination".

- Let it run the initial application search to determine which applications to install. (This will allow it to find the newer installations of iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband.)

- Click "Continue" until you reach the "Installation Type".

- Click on the "Customize" button.

- On the next screen select iDVD. (iPhoto, iMovie and Garageband were appropriately greyed out since they were already installed.)

- After you've selected iDVD click "Continue" and let it finish.

iDVD installed on my late 2008 iMac and my late 2010 Macbook Air, both running Lion OS X 10.7.3 and works as expected.

🙂 Hope this helps anyone that follows!

The retail iLife 11 definitely includes iDVD (v. 7.x) - I know because I purchased one. It is no longer available from the Apple store; however, there are plenty of resellers who still have it in stock; one of them is Amazon. No idea why they are now calling it the "old" version, possibly because the three included apps in Lion now constitute the "new" iLife??

As long as it says iLife 11 and looks like this, it includes iDVD:

Yes...and good price BTW! However as Pete and others have pointed out here and elsewhere, there are iLife '11 packages that do NOT include iDVD as well. The caveat is to purchase carefully if getting iDVD is the goal.

I just checked the Apple online store - there are no packages of the "new" iLife there - if you look at this page:

http://www.apple.com/ilife/get/

you will note: clicking on "buy now" for the complete iLife will get a "page not found".

The so called iLife 11 from MAS (on the right) is NOT a package deal: you can purchase iMovie, iPhoto and Garageband there separately - one or all of them. It would be far less confusing if those separate apps weren't being referred to as iLife 11 since it's not a package, but simply three separate apps.

The only retail disks I have seen include iDVD.

You are absolutely correct. When I went to the page, I mistakingly took it that it was the Discs, but no, it takes you to the App Store, so basically if you can get your hands on iLife '11 Discs they will include iDVD and iWeb.

Thanks for picking us up on this.

Yes, also as I mentioned in my earlier post in this thread. 😉

On my way to buy iLife 09 w/ iDVD 7 at a loca retail store, I went to the Company Store @ Apple Inc. in Cupertino, CA. I just wanted to see if they had classes and one on one help there. I told the saleperson about the problem with iDVD on being on my 10 day old iMac w/ Lion. She didn't really believe me so I went to a computer on display there and showed her. I also printed out and had with me 2 post from this discussion in case. They did not have the single copy but did have just 1 copy of iLife 11 Family Pack left and on the side in small print, it does include iDVD v7.1 as well as iWeb v 3.0.2.😀

I told her about it not being available anymore, not on Apps Store or online thought it was discontinued and even showed her She thought they have more on order but I don't think so. Her co-worker knew about the iDVD not being on some iLife snow and was very quiet as I was telling her about the problem. She said she would sell it to me for $39 and list was $79 since it was the Family pack. (MC623Z/A). She also thought it might be good if I take it to an Apple store to install which I will do tomorrow. I bought it and thought I got a good deal. 🙂

So happy I found Mac Support. Thanks for all the information presented by you all in such a positive way which kept me positive, sticking to the facts as I knew them from reading this discussion and asking for workable solutions.😎

Hmmm...when you say "...it still won't load" what do you mean exactly? Does the iDVD Application show up in your Applications menu and when you click on it nothing happens? Or does it not install at all?

In the meantime, if you're following these instructions it should work (substituting iLife '09 with iLife '11 of course):

https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3739081?start=0&tstart=0

Also, if it does seem to install properly, be sure to run a software update to get the latest version (7.1.2). Click on the Apple logo in the toolbar > Software update.

Some more details might help figure things out.

Congrats on your new "baby" by the way!

When you clicked on custom install, did you see any sub entries for anything with "themes" in it? I don't have my iDVD disks nearby, but remember there was such an entry at some point (could have been an earlier version though).

Also, check this path: HD > Library > Applications Support > iDVD > Themes - this is what mine shows (I've had every version there ever was installed):

User uploaded file

You should have at least the iDVD 7 folder populated with those themes.

How frustrating. Have you tried rebooting (restarting) your iMac? Sometimes that's necessary after installing applications.

Open iDVD and check what version it is. To do that just open your Applications list and click on the iDVD Application. The version number is in the right-hand column:

If it's anything other than v7.1.2 the new themes may not load properly. If it's older try running software update again.

If all else fails, go ahead and drag the iDVD Application to the trashcan and try reinstalling it from the disc per the instructions.

Hope that helps and let us know how it goes!

Yes, under iDVD's sub-directory there is also a "themes" box that needs to be checked. I have to run out for a short while but if this isn't resolved I can load my disc and get a screen shot.
