can receive but not send email

I suppose this happens because my new iMac (OS 10.7.3) adds "(offline)" to the name of my outgoing server, even though I am on line. I cannot delete the addition. How can I prevent this affliction?

Select Window Connection Doctor from the Mail menu bar. You should see a green dot next to each of the mail servers you've defined. Is that what you see? If not, click the Show Details button. A drawer opens at the bottom of the window. If there's text in that drawer, please post it. If not, click Check Again and post the text that appears. Edit out any personal information before posting.

Contact your ISP (internet service provider) and review with them the correct Out Going Mail Server setting as well as the port settings. You may have to modify the port number but they should be the one to assist. It is that simple.

Disappointment. I could only delete 2 of the 8 mail-related items in the keychain panel. I went systematically through the remaining 6, deleting "internet password" and saving the change, but as soon as I closed them and looked again, the words had returned. Nevertheless I deleted my email account completely, re-installed it and as before it announced that it could not connect to my outgoing mail server - and my test email remains un-sent.

I do not know what I did that was different, but on a re-run I easily deleted all 9 items in the keychain wwhich were marked 'internet password'. Sadly, on deleting and re-installing my email account the old problem returned: outgoing server not contacted. Incoming mail seems still to arrive.

PS: reply to Sig: that approach was tried early on. Setting name and port are correct.

Let's go back to the Connection Doctor window. You posted some messages from the Details view. I'm thinking that those messages came from the IMAP (incoming mail) server, not from the SMTP (outgoing) server, and that therefore they're irrelevant to your problem, which involves only outgoing mail. Did you post all the messages? If not, or if you're not sure, please try again. You may need to scroll the window to see all the contents.

I can reach that server with Mail.

Double-click the entry for the SMTP server in the Connection Doctor window. In the sheet that opens, make sure the server address is exactly "smtp.sussex.ac.uk", without the quotes and with no other characters, including spaces. Above you have some extra characters, which are wrong.

If the server address is correct, click the Advanced tab. The button labeled Use default ports and the checkbox labeled Use Secure Sockets Layer should be selected, and in the Authentication menu, Password should be selected and the Username and Password (not displayed) fields should be populated.

If all the settings seem to be correct, delete the server from the list, then recreate it. Close the Mail Preferences dialog, saving your changes if prompted, and test again.
