can receive but not send email

I suppose this happens because my new iMac (OS 10.7.3) adds "(offline)" to the name of my outgoing server, even though I am on line. I cannot delete the addition. How can I prevent this affliction?

Select Window Connection Doctor from the Mail menu bar. You should see a green dot next to each of the mail servers you've defined. Is that what you see? If not, click the Show Details button. A drawer opens at the bottom of the window. If there's text in that drawer, please post it. If not, click Check Again and post the text that appears. Edit out any personal information before posting.

I see no extra characters or spaces in my last reply to you, but be that as it may ( I know my typing is clumsy); I have carefully done all that you required immediately above (unless I chose the wrong list from which to delete the server and recreate it - I chose that along the top of the advanced panel) and as ever the word (Offlline) has appeared in the Account Info panel aand the test email remains un-sent.

Is the fact that the port has changed spontaneously from my 143 to 993 a clue to anything?

Picking up 2 points you have made, I deleted all my email settings and reset them deleting those extra letters from the outgoing server's name and also specifying port 25. Duly test emails were readily sent to my partner's PC and were received. However, on closing email and shortly afterwards opening it again, my in box, which had held 4 read mails, proved to be empty. Two replies from my partner's PC had not arrived.

All I have done is invert my problem: I can send emails but not receive them. Do we learn anything from this?

I shall try to get the screenshot posted shortly

Note to Linc:

Following on to my last post, I think I have cracked the problem at last. All I did in addition to the above was to delete SSL and add my old incoming port number, 143, to 25. My new iMac Lion now sends and receives emails using my old address. I must not select SSL because if I do my ports become altered to 993 and things go wrong again. I have sent and received several test emails, so I hope it is not premature to thank you very much for your help.
