I have a big annoyance with the Messages Beta for Mac. When I close the window and re-open it, all the conversations are gone. This makes it hard to reply to a message I got earlier or review recent conversations. On iDevices, if you close it, everything is still there, unless you delete it. This is how I think the Mac version should work, anyone agree?

I can kind of understand it, since it's iChat built in. For iChat when you close a window, it removes whatever you have, it makes sense. But that doesn't make sense for iMessages at all. If they're treated like text messages on a device, they shouldn't disappear when you close the chat window.
Actually in iChat, the transcript is wiped by default. But under the iChat preferences -> Messages you should be able to save transcripts to a file and enable to show the last messages (5, 10 , 25 , etc. )
Maybe its the same in Message preferences?

when I first tested messages beta, I texted a conversation, closed the window, and was surprised to see my conversations were not saved
however.
now my messages are saving even after shutting down the messages app completely. I turn on messages and all my chats are back where they were when I shut down. May just be a bug, but even under preferences it includes an option to choose where to save chat transcripts - so I imagine the final version will have this worked out and all your messages will be saved how you want them
I have the same problem on both of my Macs. Every time I get a new message the old history comes back, but even if I manually delete the history it comes back as soon as I get a new message. This is really beta software ;-)
Interesting, if I quit the app and re-open it they're still there. But if I close the window and open it again, they disappear.
I'm not having that problem. I'm trying to get the history to come back, but it keeps disappearing.
It can save the transcripts to a folder. But I want it to just show it in the window like it does on iOS Devices.
They're all stored in ~/Library/Messages/ and that includes any photo attachments too. To clean it all out just open terminal and enter this:
rm -r ~/Library/Messages/*
Oddly though, when I empty out the folder and reopen messages, I still see some chat transcripts but others are gone.
It's probably a bug in the Beta. You can view recent conversation by going into File > Recent Items.
Ah, there we go, thank you. Hopefully it gets fixed. I'll just leave it open, if I accidentaly close it, open the conversations that way.
When I first installed Messages, I closed it and my messages all disappeared. Now when I do it, it does not clear them. Maybe it was a bug that shows up when its first installed.
It's still clearing them for me when I close it. I've reinstalled.
Bizarre, I've just quit it again and it loads all my conversations back up.
Now it's working for me. Strange.
