Messages Beta Crashing
I downloaded the Messages beta this afternoon, but it keeps crashing. I want to uninstall the application but am unable to get that far before it crashes. Is there any way I can uninstall the beta and get ichat back?

Same problem here. Keeps telling me it was restoring windows and gives a choice. Then crashes when choice selected.
Yup. Same thing here. I can usually get it to open up and stabilize after a restart. But I don't want to have to uninstall it. 😟
My crash seems related to a specific message I received:
Some further notes:
Guess I'll revisit Messages when it becomes a little more stable.
me too here.....i think its a problem synchronasing messages....my friend has an iphone and an imac and when someone send message it goes to the two devices and all good untill here.....in my case where i have 3 devices (MBP , iPad2 and iphone ) messages in mac crashes when it try to sync the messages to the 3 devices in the same time!!!i think this is because of beta.....

I think you are absolutely correct, and being a beta it has not yet been proven to be stable with and between certain devices and programs, or else it would be out in the App Store for sale. I would probably be inclined, if it were me, to restore the system from my last Time Machine backup or if I had no backup reinstall !0.7.3
Beta software is for testing and if you don't intend testing and giving feedback to the makers, then you run a risk of having these problems with no comeback. It would be better to wait until the official release.
Good Luck
Pete
On open it asks if I want to "Don't Restore Windows" or "Restore Windows". Either gives me the beach ball of death. I have to Force Quit.
I SOLVED THE ISSUE. What you have to do is run the Messages installer again (like doing it for the 1st time). Once it's done, DO NOT RESTART. Simply open the application and go to "Messages" on the top menu. The Uninstall option now works without crashing aka you get iChat back. I just did it and it works like a charm!
GOOD LUCK!
Well said! beta is beta. Caveat emptor!
@ fergranadino looks like you found a workaround for the feint of heart 😎
What you want to do is go to the application in the applications folder,
press cmd I to get info,
then the check box where it says open in 32 bit mode, check it so its the opposite of what it is.. mine it was checked so i un checked it.
and then messages should be working smoothly.
@mt2100 This worked! Thanks! The other suggested about unistalling above did not work for me .. but unchecking the 32-bit mode worked. Now my imessage is working just fine. Thanks a bunch @mt2100
This is the answer. Take it out of 32-bit mode and it works perfectly. Never would have thought to do that on my own.
Thanks!
Switching off 32-bit mode solved my problem on Messages crashing immediately upon startup also, even after deleting all of it's associated files. FYI, this could be useful to someone. if you want to try removing all traces of Messages, you can paste this into Terminal to delete all its files:
killall imagent
rm -vrf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat
rm -vrf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.imagent
rm -vrf ~/Library/Caches/com.apple.Messages
rm -vrf ~/Library/Saved\ Application\ State/com.apple.iChat.savedState
rm -vf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.iChat*
rm -vf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imessage.plist*
rm -vf ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.imagent.plist*
Worked like a charm for me pull out of 32 bit mode
HI,
Late to this party but I have some caution to express over metabilly's deletions.
To all intents and purposes Messages beta is iChat 6.1 (the Engine if you like, is iChat's)
Both of these will be needed by iChat when it is reinstalled. Not that it won't fetch all the Buddy pics again, but it will need the Jabber items in this folder.
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.iChat
~/Library/Caches/com.apple.imagent
The IMAgent one is also used by FaceTIme and could upset it's operation if this is deleted.
The same with the various .plists
The iChat ones include ones for the AIM logins, Jabber logins and the Subnet (Bonjour Login) which will be needed by iChat if reinstalled by the deletion (Uninstall option) of Messages.
There are also the Shared Library one (The Recent List is in here, also needed by iChat on reinstall)
Messages still uses the same com.apple.ichat.plist as iChat which holds all the Preferences you may have previously set for iChat in the Preferences (Everything except the Accounts pane) as well as some Menu items.
The Status Messages one is used agiain by iChat as well as Messages beta
Again the IMAgent.plist deals with FaceTime in Lion as well as iChat or Messages beta.
A simpler method of using the Finder > Go menu and holding the ALT key shows the access point to the Home Folder/Library The Library appears in the menu Drop Down) where you can choose the Preferences or Caches folders rather than using the Terminal.
