Macbook Pro fan rattling noise.

Hi,

So I think we all know that the Macbook Pro has problems with the fan going off frequently and the laptop getting really really hot. Well, my question is, why do my fans make a rattling noise at the very beginning of when they start to run? Like I will use a program or game and the fans will start and I will hear a rattling as they are running slowly then when they pick up speed and become really loud, I dont hear the rattle anymore.

The sound may seem alarming, but seems that there's a misalignment of the fans. At lower speeds, the rattling will be most obvious, though at faster speeds, it may not be an issue.

It seems like an issue to me. The fan may need to be replaced, but may only need lubrication. Visit your local Apple Store/Genius Bar for help. It's an inexpensive repair, and you can even do it yourself.

When the computer gets hot, the fans speed up. That's not a problem. It's exactly what needs to happen to keep the computer from overheating.

Rattling fans at any speed suggests that your fan or fans may be worn out and need replacement.

I had that same problem a little over a year ago with my right fan. I checked the speeds on iStat Nano (nifty widget) and while both fans were doing the same RPMs my right fan would ramp up and start clicking loudly. It was probably just out of alignment a little. I took it in to the Apple store and they said replacement would cost about $100 (U.S.) So I just put up with it and wonder of wonders, after a few weeks, the clicking stopped. Even at high RPMs. A little answer to prayer I guess. 😉

Your fans run 100% of the time. Their default (lowest) speed is about 2000 RPM, at which speed they should be nearly inaudible, and if you don't know they're running you might not suspect they were. As the machine heats up, the fans accelerate, and especially if they are worn, damaged, obstructed, or unbalanced because of an uneven accumulation of dirt on them, you'll hear them more and more, and possibly much more at some RPM levels than at others. They top out at 6000 or 6200 RPM, depending on your MBP model.

If one or both fans (13" models have only one) is failing or not operating at full efficiency for any reason (e.g., an air duct narrowed by accumulated dust), your machine may heat up more than normally while playing demanding games, and if it nears the threshold of dangerous overheating, it will shut down for its own protection. If I were you, I wouldn't plan on any heavy gaming before you visit the Genius Bar — or at least I'd be prepared to abandon it at the first indication of abnormally high temperatures, instead of waiting for the machine to shut down.
