here is my update to this -
there is NO way to go backwards in an OS easily
i have had to buy the OSX 10.7 USB stick which cost me just under £60 (w courier charges) and is a mosrt basic slice of plastic that does not look like it was made to last and does not even come with it's owmn container
since the problem which required me to revert back to 10.7.2 (Nikon Capture NX2 instal that stopped working) i discovered that the rememdy was to Get Info on the app and check the box "Open in 32-bit" - it now works fine (so let that be a lesson!!!!!)
i have been advised that if i still needed to go back to 10.7.2 from 10.7.3 it was seriously not adviosable to put the 10.7.0 USB stick in a try to revert that way
i had stopped using TimeMachine due to 3 failures to successfully update, which made me feel it was unsafe to rely on it (tho i have been since TOLD by an Apple genius that there is absolutely no problem with TM and that if there was we would have all heard about it by now!! - not sure about that, and i also got into a bit of an argument about the same thing on a MUG discussion too - so i do not know if TM is now more stable or whether it was all due to the disc i was using ............ but Apple obviously relies on us users using TM and if there is a problem like i have had then to use it as the best way to go back in time and OS
BEWARE THERE IS A SERIOUS RUMOUR THAT THERE WILL NOT BE ANY USB STICKS FOR 10.8
so, the only choiuce left was to do what iu had started to do, and to erase and format the disc afer backing up what i had, and to use the original OS that came with the machine (in my case that was 10.6.4) and update to 10.6.8, then to use the USB stick to update to 10.7.0 and then use the combo update which is still available to 10.7.2 - and then use Migration Assistant to get all the apps from my backup - which ineveitably can cause breakages and wouold require attention to rememdy them for the next week or so
so, i guess the advice her is first do no update until you KNOW all your apps are going to work, and secondly do use TimeMachine, evn if you do not totally trust it since it might be the best way to go back in time, and thirdly have another backup strategy like SuperDuper which perfectly restored my main HD in 3 hours
a very wasteful exercise all in all, but one which had left a few "MUST DO'S" ......
