iphone 4s 16gb shows 13.6gb why?????

Apple has determined that they dont want to follow the norm and correct description of a megabyte or gigabyte even tho this is not like fashion u cant change what megabyte or gigabyte is so i dont see the point in changing something that confuses the layman who generallu does not know what a byte or bit is.....

but nevertheless Apple has chosen to confuse the layman..... when a customer asks for a quantity of something he doesnt expect to see a different figure and then be told sorry its just the way i do my math.....?? math should be the same worldwide.... and megabytes and gigabytes should be consistant around the world in their description as they are physically, for the benifit of the layman who knows nothing about this when he asks for a 16gb iphone.... he expects to see on his phone that the company that sold him the phone and has even in this case defined the standard by which it measures, that he should see that the phone reflects the capacity under which it was sold to him...... 16gb.... not 13.6, which is 2.4 gigbyte short of 16gb and even 2gb short of the standard by which apple measures by.....?????????? of course just to clarify the calcualtion you can alll read it here.... http://www.tuaw.com/2009/08/29/snow-leopard-the-new-one-gigabyte-now-slimmer-tha n-before and it is not like they have not had time to make sure the hardware follows this new measurement, no.... this was decided 3 years ago..... Apple math on the new gigabyte does not follow on the new iphone 4s..... it is supposed to be 16gb..... but the iphone 4s shows 13.6gb so if you take the fact that apple is refering to 1gb as 1000,000 kbytes then if you times 1024 by 16 to get the actual figure it is 16,000,384 but because apple have dropped the '24 in 1024 to get the figure apple uses we take away 384 from 16,000,384 leaving 16,000,000 then we divide that by 1024,000 which gives us 15,625,000

so the actuall figure on the iphone 4s for a 16gb memory capacity by apples new 1gb math, should be 15.6gb

SO APPLE WHERE HAS MY 2GB GONE.......

Even by your own math APPLE this product fails to meet its own description under the trade descriptions act.....

Your Customers have been ripped off by 2GB..... the iphone 4s has actually got 14gb in it not 16gb....

the stupid thing is that it doesnt matter how you want to calculate the megabyte or gigabyte in the end... what matters is that if you sell a phone that claims to have 16gb of memory then really i dont care about the .6 of a gb displaying all i care about is that my phone just says.... it has a capacity of 16gb and that i can use all 16gb..... how it is calculated i dont give any hoots let alone 2....

Because 1024 kbytes is 1,048,576 bytes (1024x1024); 1 kbyte = 1,024 bytes, not 1,000 bytes. And 1 GB is 1024x1024x1024, or 1,073,741,824 bytes.

16,000,000,000 / 1,073,741,824 = 14.9 GB.

And you claim 20 year's IT experience? I'm glad you aren't working for me. My admins understand this, even if they have only 6 month's experience.

what the ????? it still is not the 13.6gb that my iphone is showing????? cant be bothered to argue anymore u r are all crazy that u culd not see the point i am making is that the iphone shows less memory than it shuld and ur comment proves it now even if ur comments shows it is 1gb less.... it is still less than it shuld

i believe i mentioned that i am talking about capacity not usage. regardless of what is used the capacity stsys the same, amd my phone shows a capcity of 13.6gb not 14.9gb. but even if i took ur conclusion to be the case it still doesnt make sense because phone showed 256mb in use at purchase suggesting that the 256mb used is the os. but 14.9gb - 25b does not = 13.6gb i know that much.

I'll feed you just a bit more. Please relate where you can buy any memory/storage device in multiples of 14.9GB or 13.6GB or anything at all other than 16GB. Or 4GB, 8GB or 32 GB or 64GB. Can't find any? Neither can Apple. So they built in the nearest to your requirements that they could. Turned out to be 16GB.

please, first make your laguage proper, no need of swearing or anything
the capacity was 16 GB only, the OS and other necessary files made it less, no need to be so mad.
like if you see any-ANY phone's specification they show something like " internal memory - 4 GB (1.5 GB user available)" The rest space is for the phone's files
go buy any **** phone and it will have less internal storage than normally written

you get 13.6GB because all the iOS data installed! If you deleted iOS your iPhone wont work but youd find you have about 17/18GB! Also, you cannot say its a con cos apple give you 5GB free cloud, so you get 18.6GB!!! If you want more memory then get the 32GB model or the 64GB model like i got!

I have the same problem with my phone, yet my friend has the iPhone 4s 16gb the exact same as mine even the network and hers states 16gb mine is only 13.6 so how can that be an iOS thing? I am very confused as to why she has more data but more stuff on her phone then me and the exact same model!!

P.s it's also kinda false advertising it should state that it's not actually 16gb you revive with the phone when purchased if that is why it says 13.6gb!!! I hope the 5 does not have this problem !!

IT IS NOT A PROBLEM. It is the result of the way memory is measured, and the fact that 1KB is 1024 bytes, not 1000 bytes because it is measured in base 2. Which has been explained several times in this thread, as well as in many other threads, in Wikipedia, and as taught in any computer science course. And the same thing is true for your Windows computer, your Mac, an IBM p-Series, an Oracle Sun server or an IBM mainframe.There's no point in repeating it yet again. Just read the thread.

I just read this whole thing and couldn't stop laughing. This is probably one of the dumbest guys I have encountered. How many people explained to him how the iOS takes up memory and he still can't comprehend that? Wow. Just wow

you are all crazy.... it doesnt matter how it is calcualted.... if you buy a 16gb device you expect to see 16gb not less.... whether it be 3gb or 2gb less.... either calculation leaves the phone way short of the 16gb mark..... even if you go away and calcualte it in apple numbers it still isnt 16gb.... but if you say thats coz apple calculate it differently then, if apple change the way it is calculated, when they make a device and sell it as 16gb then they should use there own method and make sure it still has 16gb..... not 1, 2 or 3gb less... stop focusing on the way its calculated and focus on the point of my message which is that it is still a 16gb device showing 13gb capacity.....
