I am trying to download itunes 10. 5 3 but get the message "There is a problem with this windows installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run"
I currently have itunes 10.1 2 and my os is windows XP.

Perhaps let's first try updating your Apple Software Update.
Launch Apple Software Update ("Start > All Programs > Apple Software Update"). Does it launch and offer you a newer version of Apple Software Update? If so, choose to install just that update to Apple Software Update. (Deselect any other software offered at the same time.)
If the ASU update goes through okay, try another iTunes install. Does it go through without the errors this time?

When I try to update as you suggested, I get the message:

Quickly doublechecking before proceeding, Clive. The message is going on to say that the AppleSoftwareUpdate.msi can't be found?
Yes that's correct: The box says
Click ok to try again, or enter an alternative path to a folder containing the instalation program
"applesoftwareupdate.msi"

Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility from the following page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" 
thingy on the Major Geeks page):

To install the utility, doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file you downloaded.
Now run the utility ("Start > All Programs > Windows Install Clean Up"). In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any Apple Software Update entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Because your ASU won't be functional again until we get a fresh copy installed, you'll need to get the iTunes installer from the Apple Website (the install using the iTunesSetup.exe from there should reinstall ASU):

@b noir thx very much. This helps. I have Widows 7 64 Bit operation system. And I searched so much for help. But your instruction worked very well. No restart was necessary. And no unistall.
