iOS5 on iPod Touch 2nd Gen

Will it ever happen, or is my iPod Touch 2nd Gen now just a useless hunk of junk that won't work with modern apps, which all seem to need iOS5?

iPod touch, iOS 4.2, I WANT iOS 5

I now own a Nexus 4. It does everything it should and more than I need. SIM-free it cost me half the price of an iPhone 5, and I get near infinite calls, texts and data for £8/month. My iPod 1st gen will now be a loved antique that is used for music playing and not much else, and my daughter has my Nokia 6303i. Funny thing is, everything else already seems so tiny, yet I was one of those who scoffed at people with their "Phlabs". Good luck with the Cupertino money machine everyone!

It is:

Identifying iPod models

iPod touch (3rd generation)

iPod touch (3rd generation) features a 3.5-inch (diagonal) widescreen multi-touch display and 32 GB or 64 GB flash drive. You can browse the web with Safari and watch YouTube videos with Wi-Fi. You can also search, preview, and buy songs from the iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store on iPod touch.

The iPod touch (3rd generation) can be distinguished from iPod touch (2nd generation) by looking at the back of the device. In the text below the engraving, look for the model number. iPod touch (2nd generation) is model A1288, and iPod touch (3rd generation) is model A1318.

I have given up on Apple and chosen Android.

That just defeats the purpose. You bought a new device, but whether you got an Apple or an Android, it will stop receiving software updates in a matter of years. Knowing this, I will not touch Android for many reasons, one of the main ones being Google selling your information to developers every time you buy an app, and paid advertisers.

I get that this thread is about adding feature software to a device which cant take it. I too understand that technology advances and at at some point stuff becomes obsolete. HOWEVER I have just cleared down my 2nd gen itouches and now cant get any apps back. I find this dispicable of apple. I believe I have the right to have all my apps to the version suported on my device. The device is not faulty all it needs is the version of the app for 4.2.1. I cant get it!. searching and reading posts on here suggest that there is no way to get my apps back from apple. That is not asking for apple to keep upgrading my unit free of charge but it is requiring that apple allow access to the last supported version! I found that apple ***** a long time ago. I bought over $600 worth of apps for ipad and iphone. I moved to android because I wasnt happy (as many of the folks on here told us to do instead of winging). I did and have been really happy. So happy that I totally forgot how sucky apple were. And here is where I got all 6 of my apple products back out the cupboard and thought I put them back to use. As soon as I did I'm batting my head against apple again.

I do think it unreasonable to expect IOS 5 to run on my itouch

I do NOT think it unreasonable for me to be able to get the version of app which will run. Apple obviously do.

They have created built in obselecence the least they can do is still allow access to the old stuff.

Hey but thats apple

btw.....if i've missed a post somewhere which tells me how I can do this and I'm talking out my a** then I'll write a full appology. I'd rather eat huble pie than have 3 shiny pieces of junk on my desk.

so anyone knows how...please post

Can't help you with your apps unless you have a backup of your computer and you had the apps on your computer. Which you should have been doing.

I think what you should do is use only devices that never become obsolete and that store every app ever on a huge server somewhere. When you find it please post back and let us know who it is.

Apple doesn't control the 3rd party apps on the App Store, they can only keep current what app developers want to keep available.

Actually... I just talked with a developer friend of mine to ask why his app requires OS 5...and it's because the newer developer tools dropped support for the "version 6" processors in the 1st-2nd gen touches and iPhone hone 3G and original for something hone.

...

Thus, Apple doesn't control the developers, but does control the tools they have access too. However, one of the beauties of the company is that they are letting us have this discussion on their own servers, paid by our iPod and App store and Mac purchases, so that is one added perk!

Now, iOS 5 is silly to expect I guess. Notification Center would eat too much RAM, but iMessage and the ability to run the newest Facebook app, or at least even have access to old versions of apps rather than seeing) "update required" would be awesome.

As users of older devices... Yes... We understand we have a slower CPU and less RAM... But nonetheless it would be nice to use it for more than 2.5 years before it's outdated and unusable as an app machine
