I can't download Word or Excel attachments in Mail. Microsoft Answers can't help
I can save Word and Excel files e.g to 'Documents' but can't download them in their own right.
MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

The most likely cause is the sender did not attach the document, and rather just sent you a shortcut to it.
Thanks for your suggestion but files are definitely attached but I can't open them although I can save them. I can open PDF attachments without a problem

hello, just to confirm, you can save the word, excel and powerpoint attachments from Apple Mail, is that right?
the issue you have is they are not opening?
Yes. It is Apple Mail and the issue is that they are not opening when I click on the attachment.
Did you drag the attachment(s) out of the mail message first?

So what exactly happens when you try to open one of the Word or Excel attachments saved to the Documents folder?
screenshot or screen recording can help too
can you do a right click then open with on the document that your having a problem opening then upload a screenshot of it
No. Nothing happens when I do this except and error message which includes
'Library not loaded'
Reason 'Image not found'
I can drag the file to the Office file (Word etc) but I then have to re-file it. This is one solution but ideally I would like to do what I used to be able to do which is to click on the attachment and open it within Mail.
(1) Does this happen when you double-click any Word or Excel document, or just with specific documents, eg, the ones you received from someone else?
(2) Did you move Word and Excel or MS Office from the locations where they were installed by the Office installer?
(3) Did you apply MS update relevant to your version of MS Office (which is…?).
1.I don't have a problem when opening eg Word documents from files within Word
2. The problem did start when I responded to advice to move Clip art file to Trash. However, I then downloaded an Upgrade from Home and Study to Home and Business and there was no improvement. I still can't download Microsoft Clip art but have pursued that through the Microsoft Answers website although haven't had a solution
3. My version is Mac OS.x 10.6.8 and I did
