My dear fan . . .

Please pay attention. You are obviously someone who wants to contribute here, and at the same time, has a lot to learn. You're very bright, and commited to all things Mac. Here's some advice for any young person interested in getting involved here:

So, as a poster here, you cannot send anyone any file. That is not our job. Our job is to help posters help themselves. So, the Original Poster could have Googled it, found a "free" download. Or found that he should really buy the legitimate version. We can hellp them decide what to do there.

But we should never ask for their email address or offer to send them our files.

I'm sure you understand that, right?

If you have Microsoft OneNote installed (available for free on Apple App Store) then you already have the Calibri and many other Microsoft fonts on your Mac however these fonts are only available for OneNote.

Here how to make these fonts from OneNote available system wide on your Mac.

  • Open Finder then select Go to Applications from the menu.
  • Right click on Microsoft OneNote.app and select Show Package Content
  • Go to the folder Contents -> Resources -> Fonts
  • From there double click on the desired font (ie Calibri.ttf, Calibrib.ttf, etc). This will open the font in the Font Book application. From there you can click Install Font.

Note: by default, Font Book will install the font for the current user only. If you want the font to be installed for all users, select Preferences… from the Font Book menu and change the Default Install Location: from User to Computer.

No problem. I wasn't trying to accuse you of anything done intentionally.

It's far too easy to find all kinds of "free" downloads of various things on the web which are not free at all, but commercial products being posted by someone illegally. It then becomes a matter of knowing whether or not it is actually a free product. Some are easy. Photoshop is certainly not free. Many fonts are, so if a person doesn't know where a particular typeface came from, they don't know what they're getting has been illegally posted for download.

After farther research I see that it seems the name of the font is copyrighted, not the font itself.

Umm, no. There wouldn't be much point in only copyrighting the name. See Microsoft's copyright info on the font here.

You can also do a Get Info on the font and find copyright notices there, also.

But again, I'm not trying to "get you". I was just noting that the font is copyrighted and shouldn't be sent to someone who doesn't own a product it would have already came with anyway.

Calibri is a copyrighted font that Microsoft sells for $35, but at the same time, they make it "legally" available by downloading and installing one of two free packages, which also installs the fonts. Trouble is, they're both Windows programs, such as the PowerPoint Viewer. So you'd have to have an installation of Windows to install the viewer to, then copy the Calibri fonts it installs in Windows over to your Mac.

Can anyone recommend a similar(ish) font to Calibri that is definately available to both Windows and Mac users? I'm a Windows user but frequently have to email colleagues who use Macs. Outlook defaults to Calibri but what I send isn't always what the recipients see if they are using Macs. Or do fonts not 'travel' between different email systems anyway? 😕

It can be very difficult for recipients to see emails the way you intend if you're using HTML. Using very standard fonts like Arial or Times New Roman will work since both system have it. But even that depends on how the recipient has their email client set up. If they have it set to always display messages as text only, then it doesn't matter what you do on your end. It will always and only display in the font and text size they have their end set to.

Finding a similar font to Calibri (basically, pick any typical sans serif font like Arial) would run into the same problem. If they don't have that same font installed on their end, their email client will display the text in whatever font they have set as the default for HTML messages.
