how to convert tiff's to jpeg's

Quick question...I'm trying to convert tiff's into jpeg's and have tried two methods that DON'T WORK. I tried dragging them into iPhoto but a window comes up saying it doesn't recognize the file and 2) tried opening in Preview to "Save as" but the pic won't even open up in Preview.

Is there a downloadable convertor for Mac or something else I can do?

Please help!

Thanks in advance.

Easiest for me (running Lion) is: open the TIFF in Preview; from the File drop-down select Export; then select JPEG as the save Format. A nuisance! I have no difficulty dragging TIFFs into iPhoto, a bigger nuisance, except the best thing about the iPhoto route, if it works for you, is then being able to select multiple pix for emails or uploading to FaceBook, etc.

I've tried writing Terminal commands that are supposed to make JPEGs the default format for Grab--no luck with that. Thru Snow Leopard I used--and loved--a wonderul free app called Skitch. So easy for great grabs, quick edits, and being saved as JPEGs by default.

I am so happy to know about this option. I was really upset when they took away the "Save As" option for Preview, but the "Export" option seems to provide all the same functionality, including being able to change the file format to JPG, PDF, PNG or TIFF, plus all of the Quartz Filter options such as reducing the file size and converting the document to black and white.
