Hi,

In the Finder use th GO Menu and hold down the ALT key and then select Library.

In here navigate to the Preferences Folder

Delete (Drag to Trash) the file called com.apple.ichat.plist

Restart iChat.

Can you access the Preferences now to Add Accounts ?

Hi,

MobileMe will give you an name that Ends @me.com and it can be used in iChat whilst it is still valid.

iCloud also gives you @me.com names but they tend to be linked to a previous Apple ID.

Technically both are Valid AIM Screen Names (if you keep the passwords to 16 characters or Less).

So we could have a MobileMe name that has "Run Out" and is not longer valid.

HI,

We probably need to check a few places.

1) Check in System Preferences > iCloud that the name is listed and appears to log in to iCloud.

2) In System Preferences > Mail, Contacts and Calendars check that the same iCloud ID has Messages enabled.

Repeat for all IDs that should be in there that iChat can access.

3) Keychain

In Applications/Utilities open Keychain Access.

In the top left panel select the Login item if not selected

In the lower left select Passwords.

Find and check the items on the right.

Double clicking an item brings it up in it's own window.

Click the Show Password Box (Confirm your Login Password and "Allow Once")

Does this password seem to be correct ?

In the individual panel click the Access tab/Button

Is this allowing Messages/iChat to access the password ?

At present you will not have lost your Buddy list as these are held on the servers involved (Screen Names only) and iChat links with the Address Book for "Real Names".

This will mean that we can delete the com.apple.ichat.(xxx).plist items if required.

I have the same problem... I had it with iChat on Lion and now Messages on Lion... rebooting will work but that's something i don't want to do regurarly ...

I think it has to do with a subservice of the OS that is broken, or at least stayed the same between ichat and messages

Restarting the program doesn't work... force quitting it won't work either...

is there a subservice in the OS that handles these things?

greetings

I see you have found it.

(And where to Quit it)
