Is my hardware junk?

I have just plugged in an M-Audio Keystation 49e this week. I wanted some way to input from a keyboard so I went cheap just to get something started. I have noise, driver is not an issue per M-Audio.com, but more important, the midi instruments in LE7 stink! My appologies up front if anyone is a true bred macoholic, but this is junk. Would I have better midi sounds with a controller that creates its own voices and leave the LE inputs out of the mix? I don't have a strong keyboard background and no synth education so I am green on this. Anyone have an opinion about midi voices that would help me?, Thanks

So, more to be found in LE, that is good news. Thanks for your comments, I went with this keyboard with the idea that LE has what an external unit would offer in options, but I let loose today without looking further into LE for tools to bend with, do you know of any instructional materials that would lead toward understanding synth creation and how LE has the same capabilities? Thanks for your time.

If you check out the Logic Express Plugin Reference (On the content CD I believe) you can check out everything you'll need to know, if you skip to Chapters 13 or so you can go right into the software instruments they provide. (Which are quite real - I think you were referring to the General MIDI instruments on the default autoload window)

Thanks ShawnS, I just finished my first complete read of that manual. I feel a bit like a dunce for not looking at what I already have for an answer. This is the very program I need, Logic is so good. All the synth I could study for the near future is here. You are right that the GM default is what I was playing with. Thanks to you and all musicians who read and post here, what a great crowd of people, Faders up!
