how do I get rid of text enhance spyware

For the last like, two days, text-enhance spyware has taken over both safari and firefox on my computer. It underlines weird words and shows a "text enhance" pop up when you hover over the word. Its so annoying, and I cant figure out how to get rid of it. Please help!

When viewing a webpage page today, I noticed text / link insertions on the webpage. I have never seen it before. I went through the extension removals directions but I had none of the listed / suspect extensions to delete. I disabled all extensions, quit the program, restarted the computer, revisited the website and the insertions are still present. I tried different browsers (Firefox, Opera) on the same machine (OSX 10.9.1) and the insertions were still on the specific website. I tried the same website from my work machine (Win 7, strong network protections) and the link insertions did not appear under either Firefox or MS Internet Explorer. Back to my mac, and the extra text (for tha one website) is still present.

I am unaware of any new software or any new extensions on machine.

Any suggestions?

Thanks.

I have added a reply at the end of the thread and then saw this request for a site so you could investigate.

orderofmaltausawestern.org

the "v..." is for the popular erectile dysfunction drug. This site would not accept its name.

On the home page, the added text is "making v... last", "order v..." and "list of generic v... products". All are active links.

Thanks,

Hi,

I read the whole thread, but nothing seems to work.

I've had those enhance texts for about a day after I tried to install a game through Pirate Bay, which seems to be the worst thing I could have ever done. I even get more ads than usual - at least I have adblock, but I have to disable it on a specific website, consequently I get those annoying ads + the enhance text.

There is no extension on my safari apart from Adblock, which doesn't seem to be the problem. I looked in my apps to see if I installed anything that wasn't supposed to be there, but everything seemed alright.

This is getting really annoying. What can I do?

Thank you.

Here you have a lot of handy shortcuts.

http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1343

1. Copy one of the paths.

~/Library/Safari/Extensions/

~/Library/Application Support/

~/Library/LaunchAgents/

2. Press Command-Shift-G in Finder and it will do the "Go to Folder"

3. Paste the path you copied in the first step and press Go.

4. Look for a file or folder with codec m in it:

codec-M.safariextz

Codec-M

com.codecm.uploader.plist

repeat for each path.

Can you find anything at all in those folders with Codec in the name?

I followed each of the steps, but I couldn't find any files with Codec in the name.

It all seems perfectly clear.

I installed Chrome and this browser works perfectly fine - nothing pops up + I don't have green enhance and annoying texts.

I ran two complete scans with two different antiviruses. The problem does not seem to be on the computer. I don't get it...

It's full of bugs. By it, I mean the OS and the programs. Different users have different issues, but the problem is always the same... Apple. You might just try switching off plug ins entirely, but that may do no good. A standard response is 'back up your files and reinstall the OS'. Or you could just continue using Chrome until you're annoyed enough to do that- I know Safari will still pop up on a lot of occasions, but it's a bandaid of sorts. Sorry you're having the trouble.

For me, the solution was upgrading Adobe Flash. On my computer, both Chrome and Firefox were infected- not Safari. I believe the problem related to installing a free YouTube downloader. Annoying as H*ll. Anyway, I believe another user found the same solution useful. Certainly beat trying to find add-ons and extensions which seemed to be behaving normally before. Come to think of it- the problem may have been obviated on Safari with click to Flash. Hope this helps. Bob

I also managed to solve my problem. The solution was actually really easy.

When you over one of the enhance words, it shows you a pop up ad. In the lower left corner (if I remember well), it says ''What is it'' (maybe it's a question mark... I really don't recall exactly what it was but once you'll see it, you'll know that's what I'm talking about). You click on it and they will redirect you to a website. The only thing you have to do is click on ''opt out''. The problem has been gone ever since.

The newest version of this virus was impossible to get rid of, so I reformmatted my hard drive. Luckily I had a back up from a month ago.

Not only was I getting underlined words, but I had a debilitating amount of pop ups. Even with a pop up blocker, it was clear it was working overtime and was just a band aid and still slowing down my computer and putting endless cookies in it, not a real solution to the problem.

I checked everywhere, extensions, extensions on browsers I don't use, the library folder, and I used secure deletion of files. I found files that were suspicious but even when I deleted them the problem persisted.

There is also a lot of misinformation about this virus. I highly doubt that you can just "opt out" without at least getting lots of background ******** on your computer still. I even paid for norton antivirus but it wouldn't detect it.

Save yourself the time and energy and just back up what you need and reformat the whole thing.
