Translating older word processing files
I have files that were created in Apple Works and Word Perfect for Mac that need to be translated. Mac Link does not make a version for Lion. What else can I use to translate these files?

Anne from Emmett: by now you may be coming round to the idea that it might just be better just to go back to Snow Leopard.
😁

Not everyone solves issues by giving up Tom.

It will open the wpd files, I am not so sure about the earlier wp1...7 files, see MacFat.
Thanks Csound1.
Or another solution. As long as the goal is to just open WP for Windows files, I just tried the WP Windows versions 2, 3, 5, and 6-8 files with LibreOffice http://www.libreoffice.org/download/ and it opened them all successfully as long as the .wpd suffix was present. The program lists .wpd files among the file types it can open.
And one more option which I just discovered: http://www.columbia.edu/~em36/wpdos/mac-intel.html offers WPMac Appliance which is a prebuilt Mac OS 8.6 installation which has WP for Mac 3.5E pre-installed. Setting up SheepShaver, which is what this uses, can be something of a pain, but this just works.
I wonder if annefromemmett is still listening...
I guess it all depends how much time you have. Most people have work they need to get on with and are looking for the quickest, simplest solution that works. Going for that doesn't mean "giving up". It means "dealing with a problem and moving on".

???????????? dealing with a problem and moving on, in this case, is an almost an oxymoron (which sounds applicable) Your's is a matter of taking your ball and going home.
Good Luck

Hi FatMac, I have checked all now: LibreOffice/OpenOffice/NeoOffice (in Mac) exactly the same. So reading is possible, as you demonstrated.
In my installations, the wpd under "Save As" is still not there (but who wants to save as wpd?). It will save the file in other formats, the "Save" and "Save All" menu entries are greyed out.

In the amount of time you have spent repeatedly disparaging Lion on these forums, you could have fixed your problems with it by now.
Seems to me you could do an AppleScript to do your updating in less time that it takes to revert.

You're just going to have to get used to it, aren't you?
There's no apostrophe in "yours". Not ever. In no circumstances.
Shouldn't that be 'In any circumstances' ?

The Sheepshaver-WordPerfect packages at http://tech.groups.yahoo.com/group/wordperfectmac/ are easy to set up. They run the last version of WordPerfect for the Mac on any OS from 10.4 on. Hundreds of third-party enhancements include Microsoft Word converters, and a 7000-plus membership offers expert support.

This thread is over 3 months old. @ updates behind.

I have used Word to open old 2003 Applework documents. Use "Recover Text from any file" in the Open box. Select all of the open document as no text shows up. Select a font and the text appears.
