iMac Wi-Fi update v1.0 : is it working for you?

I'm running Lion OS on an iMAC. Experienced the wifi - connectivity problems in regard to the Sleep function. In addition to this, I was also experiencing multiple drops in connection throughout the day- sometimes 40+ drops a day. iMac was also running extremely slow. Reconnecting was not always easy, I would get multiple "time outs" and other times my network couldn't be found at all.

Since updating yesterday as per a gracious poster who posted this update

http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1501?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US

my iMAC is running faster. I have only had the wifi connect upon sleep problem twice, but it resolved itself quickly when I found my network and just clicked on it in the drop down. I have not had any drops since. I'm wondering how others are faring with the new update?

The Wi-Fi update appears to have fixed the problem with my 27" iMac but my 24"iMac and to a lesser extent my 17" 2.66GHz MBP still suffers from the Wi-Fi problem. Both Macs have a number of locations within Netwrok in System preferences and when they won't connect I just go through the different locations until one connects. I get the Macs connected eventully but it is an extreme annoyance and it shouldn't have to be done that way.

I to an dissapointed with Apple.

Have you guys got problems connecting to a specific network (e.g. at home) or does this occur everywhere? If the issues show up only at home, you may want to reconstruct your network from scratch as there were firmware updates for the Apple base stations "forced" (e.g. without the owner's knowledge) into them recently which created issues for many people (espcially for networks with multiple base stations). So your issue could be two-fold. One thing you should do for sure is to ditch your network preferences, preferred networks and keys for your network to refresh your settings.

You make a valid point regarding firmware updates on the base stations. I did update my base station firmware.

In my case, only my iMac was having the problems, none of my other devices or Macs (iBOOK, MacBOOK), were affected. This only started with the Lion OS on my 21.5 iMAC. I would be consistantly having hangs, or drops, all through the day. If I went on my iBOOK or MacBOOK, they would still have a working connection.

The v1.0 update to my iMAC has improved the problem significantly. I can go days without a drop or hang.

I've also done the things you mentioned, as well. 😀

After you update your base station's firmware, you will unfortunately have to recreate your network from scratch. Several people had issues that was resolved after doing that properly (i.e. erase your network's credentials on all devices and turn them off, hard reset your base stations--make sure only one is set up to distribute addresses, others have to be bridges---, recreate your network---perhaps with a new name--and turn on your devices one at a time so that it gets a good IP address).

MichelA, I did not recreate the network from scratch, nor the other things that you mentioned, but I'll have to give AppleCare a call and have them guide me through it. I guess I'm 3/4 of the way there. Thanks for this information. I will definitely do it and will report back here. Appreciate your taking the time. 🙂

Judging on the number of posts of a lot of people here, it seems that the iMac wifi-updat that Apple launched is not solving the problem...

I appreciate the many suggestions like recreating networkdefinition, changing your wifi settings and protocols, but in the end: APPLE is just letting all of us down. They introduced a bug in Lion which they cannot solve (remember this is not the only one: I suffered for months as they changed the security protocol for accessing the NAS; it took Lacie, Iomega etc months to review their firmware to get it working again).

I'm really fed-up with the arrogancy of the Cupertino-boys.

Posted last Saterday a feedback message on their LION OSX-forum:

I encourage you all to do the same ... (by the way: didn't got a respons on it- what could you expect...)

Definately my first and last iMac

Hi to all,

Just wish to advise all of what my current situation is.....

While there are 5 Macs in my home, only 3 of them belong to me.

My 27’ iMac was built in May of 2010 and the Wi-Fi update fix the problem on this Mac, So I’m happy.

My older 24” iMac was built in August of 2007 and the problem still exists.

My 17” MBP was built in June of 2010 and I have a similar problem with this when it wakes from sleep or when it’s first started although the problem doesn’t occur as often it is still annoying.

All Macs are running 10.7.3, all software is up to date and the firmware on my Time Capsule has been updated. It makes no difference whether or not I use my Time Capsule of the Wi-Fi cable modem that my ISP supplied to connect to the net. The problem is the still there.

I have deleted all locations from within Network on both the 24” iMac & the MBP and started from scratch.

Both now have a number of new locations and when one won’t connect I just go through and try each location until I find one that works. If none work, I just create a new location.

While I am not as angry as Peter_Belgum, I do find the current situation very annoying to say the least. I just hope Apple realise that they do have a major problem out in the Mac community and do something about.

I also posted a message to Apple’s feedback page but didn’t get a reply.

Kind regards to all, and I thank every one for their support and suggestions.

My new 27 inch iMac still won't work on my wifi network. I'm running 10.7.4 and the fixes I've foung throught the Apple community do not work. Does any one know how I can get a refund on my iMac - I've had it several months, but this is a deal breaker for me. I've never been so upset over a product not working. The people at the genius bar replaced my wifi radio antenna, but still not working. I can't believe that Apple would sell such a defect product. Does any one know of any class action law suits over this issue?

I'm going to assume that you bought the Applecare Protection, right? If your Mac is only a few months old, I would certainly call them and tell them that you've brought it to be fixed, and that the problem persists. Being that you've only had it a few months, perhaps they will have you send it back to them and they will send you a new one. I do not know if you can get a refund, again, that is something you should discuss with them. But if you have Applecare Protection and your machine is so young and not working, I'm sure they will send you a replacement. It certainly is worth a shot, and with coverage, it is doable. Best wishes. I haven not heard of any class action suits. That seems rather ...harsh. It could be something as simple as exchanging your machine for another one under Applecare.
