iMac Wi-Fi update v1.0 : is it working for you?

I'm running Lion OS on an iMAC. Experienced the wifi - connectivity problems in regard to the Sleep function. In addition to this, I was also experiencing multiple drops in connection throughout the day- sometimes 40+ drops a day. iMac was also running extremely slow. Reconnecting was not always easy, I would get multiple "time outs" and other times my network couldn't be found at all.

Since updating yesterday as per a gracious poster who posted this update

my iMAC is running faster. I have only had the wifi connect upon sleep problem twice, but it resolved itself quickly when I found my network and just clicked on it in the drop down. I have not had any drops since. I'm wondering how others are faring with the new update?

Yes - I have 2 other Mac's and a couple of iPhones, and an iPad that use the same wifi with no problems.

The wifi router is in the same room as iMac, so its not a weak signal. I do not have the option of going wired. I have small children in the house, and having a wire stretched across the living room floor isn't safe.

I do have Apple care - and intend to follow up on that again - for a third time.

Ok. I've had that similar problem a while back, all my other devices, (Ipad, Ipod, Macbook) all worked with the wifi but not the iMAC running Lion OS. I called Apple and my router was a bit old, (over 5 years) and they guided me through updating the firmware.

This took care of the problem. If you've done that already, I would recommend a PRAM reset, and here is a link. It only takes a few MINUTES...and is extremely helpful and getting things running right again if things get a little "off".

Try this and see if it makes a difference. If not, there is something else you can try. But let's do a step at a time.

Also - what router are you using and how old is it?

I do think it might be your router - perhaps your Airport Extreme needs an update:

go to applications>utilities> and click on AirPort Utility.app.

Click the app, then see if it needs a firmware update. I think that might be your problem. It no update is available, call Apple Care Back, and see if they can guide you through resetting your AirPort Extreme, or perhaps exhuasing all other possibilities to make sure it isn't your new Mac. I doubt it is the new Machine but if all of your firmware is up to date with Airport and it's working with other devices, I am really leaning towards it being related to your AirPort Extreme, which is easily remedied.

AirPort Utility 5

  1. Open AirPort Utility.
  2. Select your base station and choose Manual Setup, or double-click on the Wi-Fi base station icon.
  3. Choose Base Station > Upload Firmware...
  4. From the window that appears, select a firmware version and click OK. If you select Other from the Upload Version menu, you will be prompted to manually locate the firmware update.

AirPort Utility 6

  1. Open AirPort Utility.
  2. Select the base station you want to downgrade.
  3. Place the mouse cursor over the version number and hold down the Option key to turn it into a pop-up menu. Press and hold the mouse button to open the menu.
  4. From the menu that appears, select a firmware version and click OK. If you select Other, you will be prompted to manually locate the firmware update.

Maybe try a hard reset of your Airport Extreme Router. If none of these things work, call Applecare again with the case number they assigned you .. PS..just out of curiousity, you said you have called them already a few times.

What did they tell you the problem was or why did you get off of the phone if it wasn't fixed? I ask because when I had problems, the tech and I spent HOURS on the phone, until it was fixed. Hopefully you get the tech's name/email as I always do, in case I have a problem. They are always happy to give me the info so I can take it back up with them. Good luck.

Hard Reset

With the AirPort Express plugged into power, press and hold the device's reset button for 10 seconds. A green light will flash for a bit and then the device will reset itself -- a process that takes about 45 seconds. Once reset, you can configure it with the AirPort Express Assistant or the AirPort Admin Utility.

I'm glad that the reset helped. Every so often, if you notice problems and if PRAM doesn't work, do a reset of the router. 🙂

Another thing to keep your machine running smoothly, when you have time, is, go to

APPLICATIONS>UTILITIES>DISK UTILITY

Then select Macintosh Hard Drive, then click on Repair Disk Permissions. 🙂 Now that you have things running, you might want to do that...takes a few minutes, but worth doing!

And make sure your software is always up to date, v. 10.7.4.

Glad to help!
